Investigations are underway into the fire that broke out at late Minster Arumugam Thondaman’s Bungalow at Ramboda Vavanton Estate in Kotmale.
Police said the fire broke out early this morning and that a part of the bungalow has been completely destroyed by the fire. It was reported that antique furniture in the bungalow were also destroyed.
The cause of the fire has not been revealed yet. Police said that there was only a watchman at the bungalow at the time of the fire and the Nuwara Eliya and the Hatton Dickoya Municipal Councils Fire Brigades were able to control the fire.
Former Minister Saumyamoorthy Thondaman, the founder of the Ceylon Workers' Congress, had bought and lived in this bungalow in the early days of his entry into politics and the late Arumugam Thondaman had lived there for a short time after the death of Saumyamoorthy Thondaman.
The son of the late Ceylon Workers Congress leader, who is currently the State Minister Jeevan Thondaman had last resided in the bungalow.(Ranjith Rajapaksa)
