Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will step down today making the way for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint a new Cabinet, Daily Mirror learns.

The Prime Minister called on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday and discussed it. He will have a special Cabinet meeting at 4.00 p.m. today. Afterwards, he will make a public statement announcing his resignation from office.

Later, the President is slated to appoint a small Cabinet to govern the country for a brief period till the dissolution of parliament after March 1, next year.

In the formation of the Cabinet, the leaders of the parties that backed the President will be given preference. According to sources, it will be a Cabinet of 15 members.

At yesterday’s meeting, the Prime Minister brought to the notice of the President the alleged post-election violence targeting the UNP supporters in some areas.

The President promptly instructed the authorities concerned to look into it. (Kelum Bandara)

    At last.

Tissa Perera Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:11 AM

Time to go Mr. PM. Let Gota do what he came to do. No point in holding on to this.

    Anmanpan Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:13 AM

Good riddance of bad rubbish. I hope he will also leave the UNP. Enough is enough.

    Wijebahu Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:20 AM

Please please resign from the party leadership as well and let young blood takeover the party and reorganise. This is the only way u can stop losing the election by 2/3rd majority. UNPiers are sick with your soft approach towards the opponent and deals u make with them.

    Appu Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:22 AM

We are going to miss the gentleman Ranil. In the future, there is no proper leader in UNP. A bunch of jokers will remain in the party.

    Appu Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:26 AM

A man who escaped in several incidents, is going to resign. I remember, Ranil survivesd when lalith and Gamini were fighting for the top post in 80s.

    hoodwinker Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:31 AM

    Resign

    Vipin B Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:32 AM

Finally. That was stronger than Super Glue.

    Yehiya Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:37 AM

Made the worse to party. Say bye to all.

    Thomas Wednesday, 20 November 2019 08:43 AM

Too late Should have resigned when results were announced

    BuffaloaCitizen Wednesday, 20 November 2019 09:04 AM

I am not a fan of Gota, but this is the chance for Ranil to make a graceful exit from Politics. He is absolutely institutionalized

    Cisco Wednesday, 20 November 2019 09:07 AM

Part of the game plan. Then who will be opposition leader? Sampanthan? How comes the majority in the parliament to Joint opposition now? Over to you Mr Speaker?

    Bandula Wednesday, 20 November 2019 09:38 AM

Lalith and Gamini were killed otherwise we would not have had to suffer this person for so long. Gota avenged their deaths though

    dd Wednesday, 20 November 2019 09:52 AM

    Give the leadership to Chandrika!

    Anoosh Wednesday, 20 November 2019 10:30 AM

People of SL will very soon realize that they have lost a genuine leader with vast political knowledge with good governance. Be Strong Hon. Prime Minister, true will never fade, and genuine people will be with you forever.

    Varuna Wednesday, 20 November 2019 01:32 PM

Dear Anoosh, It is so nice to see a comment of this nature. People of Sri Lanka do not value leaders in the calibre of Hon. Ranil Wickremasinghe. But when they realise, alas, it is too late.

Yankee Dude Wednesday, 20 November 2019 10:36 AM

Resign as PM and leader of the UNP . Will not believe until resignED .

Ronnie Bugger Wednesday, 20 November 2019 12:49 PM

You should have done this one year ago, you leech. But no, you had to hang on and prevent Sajith a far better chance at the polls. 'deiyange namayen' Please go.

june macapagal Wednesday, 20 November 2019 01:25 PM

It is a good decision to resign as MP. Also he must give up the leadership of the UNP and get a good guy appointed as the leader to review UNP so that at least at the general elections UNP will be able to maintain a good presence.

Sarath Mendis Wednesday, 20 November 2019 01:40 PM

Whatever said Ranil is the best leader. Young idiots ruined Sajith and the party

    Roshan Wednesday, 20 November 2019 01:42 PM

And also please please dont take the leader of the oppositon post for God sake. If there is no one capable in UNP to undertake, at least give it to Anura or Sampanthan.

    Sando Wednesday, 20 November 2019 01:53 PM

Ranil must be the Opposition Leader. He is the World's best Opposition Leader by far....Longest Serving.

    M.R. Romesh Gunawardene Wednesday, 20 November 2019 02:45 PM

Sir, you have done nothing for the past 4 1/2 years, what is the point sitting and heating up your seat. Thank you a million for tendering your resignation.

    Imeshi Wednesday, 20 November 2019 03:15 PM

He left one year late. Meanwhile, in this year, many lost their lives, many lost their livelihoods, many businesses two generations old had to close. We paid a high price for the size of Mr. Clean's brain

    Manu Wednesday, 20 November 2019 04:52 PM

He has not resigned still? Till he resigns we can't believe. He can be a tea boy in the parliament.
