Discussions are underway among political parties to approve a resolution in Parliament with two-thirds majority calling for its dissolution in case the Supreme Court holds that the dissolution violated the Constitution.
The government which took office on October 26 is considering the possibility of relinquishing office in the event the Supreme Court rules that the dissolution of Parliament by President Maithripala Sirisena is invalid.
Negotiations are underway among several political parties to submit a resolution in Parliament calling for a general election.
President Maithripala Sirisena and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya are known to held talks both formally and informally on how best to end the present stalemate. Some UPFA MPs have requested the President to declare a referendum to seek public opinion on holding a general election. (Kelum Bandara)

Now we realize how dumb our MPs are. Why do you want to go for a referendum to seek public opinion on holding a General Election, very well they can get this opinion in parliament by asking for 2/3 votes in parliament, you don't have to spend a massive public money like spending for a referendum. See how idiotic our MPs are.

No one is saying to spend the money. Referendum is required only if politicians do not agree. What's the hope of getting that agreement from this greedy, corrupt, unprincipled lot? Referendum should be the last throw of the dice

Exactly. We can't imagine what a set of idiots who propose a referendum and then an election.

Finally, everyone seems to be coming to their senses. Yes, irrespective of the Court's decision, there must be a general election and that's the only way to put this saga to bed.If some political parties do not support holding an election (two third majority), the President should call for a referendum of people. Everyone already knows what the result of a referendum will be.

What a dump idea calling for a referendum. Parliamentarian can make this decision for the people as they were elected to do. Unnecessary spending must be curtailed as Sri Lanka cannot afford. The whole Srisena saga must have cost the country dearly.

I am not a UNP supporter. However the way MR was appointed as PM was a disgrace. Now Sira is against the wall. Sira has to be charged for violation of the constitution. This is a very serous offense and only some my in insane.

Why waste our money on a unnecessary Referendum when the idiots only have to speak to each other and agree for a General Election / Presidential Election because the major parties are willing for it.
Ranjit Wednesday, 12 December 2018 09:12 AM
Easier to get blood out of a stone than dragging UNP for an election

Opinions differ. All token gestures. Many will abstain but what majority says is fine. No need for refrundum. Wasting public time money in fact make citizens f--ls

This is exactly what everyone wants. The President's call was a General Election. Who was behind this confusion. The big question......
