The Department for Registration of Persons (DRP) has launched a special online system to verify the details of a National Identity Card (NIC) through a Data Authentication and Verification system, Department if Register of Persons Commissioner General Vianni Gunathilaka said.

He told the Daily Mirror that with the introduction of the programme, the details of NICs would be obtained by State institutions, Corporations, Statutory Boards, Banks, Financial Institutions, Telecommunication Service Provider Institutions and Insurance corporations at the discretion of the client.

Accordingly, agreements have been signed with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) (Stock Market), Immigration and Emigration Department, Bank of Ceylon (BoC), Nations Trust Bank (NTB), Dialog Finance Plc, Sampath Bank, State Bank of India and Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) to obtain the online data verification service, the Commissioner General said.

Department of Pensions, Sri Lanka Customs, Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), National Lotteries Board, Peoples' Bank, Hatton National Bank (HNB), Sanasa Development Bank (SDB) and Vallibel Finance PLC and many other state and private institutions waiting to sign an agreement with the programme, he said.

The technical assistance was provided by the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA).

Under this programme, it will prevent personal data duplication and stop fraudulent activities, the Commissioner General added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

The NIC system is computerised. This is common sense. Good news for the ignorant. The majority in Sri Lanka is ignorant and have a low IQ, the bear truth.
