Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said yesterday that no decision has been taken to sing the National Anthem only in Sinhala.

There had been different opinions expressed by politicians who hold different views with regard to the singing of the National Anthem in Sinhala, these views should not be interpreted as decisions made by the government.

He expressed these views joining a discussion had with the heads of the Tamil Media and also said that during a festival of the Tamil nationals singing of the National Anthem in that language is not prohibited.

He also said that a country should have only one National Anthem and in India where there is a diversity of many languages, the Indian National Anthem is sung only in one language.

Even debating on this issue is also aggravating the differences among the communities and only from the newspapers that he had come to know about an issue connected with the National Anthem. (Nalaka Sanjeewa Dahanayake)

indian anthem is sung by all races. fine. but the language is bengali which is not even 30% of the population. thus, by the same reckoning, it is a fitting tribute to sing ours in tamil

In many multilingual democracies, the national anthem is also sung in different languages. For example in Switzerland in German, French and Italian. Just because in Sri Lanka the partly racist majority feels unjustifiably superior, is no reason to sing the national anthem only in Sinhalese.

"a country should have only one National Anthem" is your opinion and obviously majority Sinhalese opinion. Bcos your a lousy crooked Buddhist and racist too, your unable to take the middle path where the national anthem can be sung in both Sinhalese

I am not biased Every country in the world has one anthem Please have the sinhala anthem only Otherwise it is a joke to sing in 2 languages

What a big palava over a petty matter. Tamil speaking people are a majority in the North and East. Ignore the racist and sing it in both languages. It takes an extra two and a half minutes in the ceremony.

Wow I really thought it was Hindi, well in that sense I suggest we sing in English

i mean all those who're involved in this untimely brag request , shouldn't be having any guts to realize that they're much more sophisticated dilemmas in this country to be addressed, such as destitution, nepotism, extortion, organized crime, child sexual abuse..to name a few.rest of the world is hurtling towards to find other planets supports life. but our politicos, would call them as imbeciles just wasting their time on resolving which language should we serenade Sri Lanka National Anthem. makes perfect sense.
