The Government had approved the building multi-storey car parks in selected towns including Colombo, Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.

He was addressing the weekly cabinet briefing at the Information Department, “The Government has also decided to implement mixed development projects in the Colombo city and other selected cities,” he said.
He said that several blocks of land had already been identified for the programmes.

"The programme to construct and maintain vehicle parks by investors selected as per the open competitive procurement process has been planned to minimize the daily traffic congestion caused due to the influx of vehicles to Colombo and the suburbs,” he said.

These projects will be implemented under two methods. The invitation of proposals from the private sector investors for the construction of general multi-storied vehicle parks and mechanical parking stations at eight venues within Colombo and the suburban tons of Battaramulla, Anuradhapura and Kandy as a State-Private Joint Venture,” he said.

“Invitation of proposals for the construction of general multi-storied vehicle parking premises and mechanical parking stations in Narahenpita, Telecom car part in Pettah, the car park at the Otters Sports Club - Colombo 07 and Kinsey Avenue - Colombo 07 with other appropriate projects including housing units, office spaces so that the expenditure for the project can be generated from the project itself on a pre-sale basis,” he said.

This type of car park would be much better than the highway robbers that was carried out under the name of Tanaga.
