Nearly, 75% of the road accidents which took place during the new year season caused by motorcycles and three-wheelers, Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said these details were received following an 18-hour surveillance mission conducted since April 18.
"Following the surveillance, motorcycle and pillion riders, three-wheeler drivers and passengers were classified as vulnerable groups on the road," he said.
Therefore, they needed to take all precautionary measures to prevent road accidents, he said.
Meanwhile, 905 drivers who drove their vehicles after consuming alcoholic liquor had been arrested and 6,898 cases relating to road traffic violations involving drivers and riders during the period of 18-hours, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
"Random checking is still underway with breathalysers for the drivers who enter the expressways. For that purpose, special police teams have been deployed at every expressway entry points," the Spokesman added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Did these tuks and motorbikes accidents involve 4 wheel vehicles and who were the guilty parties? For some reason, he did not give those statistics. Why? I am sure a very few involved tuks to tuks motorbikes to motorbikes and the other way round. Biased news conference it seems.
