The proposal made by the Minister of Buddha Sasana Gamini Jayawickrama Perera to the Cabinet yesterday banning Wesak Pandals and Danasalas was turned down by the Ministers severely objecting to the proposal.
In the midst of the opposition by the Ministers, Minister Jayawickrama Perera had opined that this was an idea mooted by the Mahanayakes.
Ministers who expressed objections had voiced saying that putting up Pandals and conducting Danasalas during Wesak had been a tradition for a long time, and therefore restrictions cannot be imposed, however a request can be made to have the Pandals exhibited on another day avoiding the Poya day, but it is appropriate time that the Dansalas are organized on the Poya Day, the Ministers had commented. its a Sinhala culture for years why you planning to ban that? don't mess with people's culture or religion. do other development processes to the country, do something useful for people who have voted for you. do something about these national wild safari jeeps chasing and harassing animals for their benefit, the same thing with Mirrissa whale watching they started chasing whales which are not right.

The Wesak day has become a revellers carnival. It definitely is not our religion or our culture.

This government must know not to trouble, trouble unless trouble troubles them, as they will only double trouble a nd trouble others too. The change of May day also was a simillar stupidity.

Going by the comments on this news item it is clear that nobody is paying attention to the statement that this idea was mooted by the Mahanayakes. So the question arises; is the Minister lying about it? If so, how do we know? But if it is in fact an idea mooted by the Mahanayakes then why criticize the government?
