The Panadura Additional Magistrate Chandana Kalansuriya today sentenced the  person who spat saliva at health officials at Atalugama on  December 2, to six years rigorous imprisonment, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He also said the Magistrate has ordered the suspect to pay Rs. 100,000 as compensation each of the four health officials.

A COVID-19 infected person from Atulugama, Bandaragama had spat saliva at a group of PHIs and health officials who attempted to take him for medical treatment in December last year.

The police had initiated an investigation into this incident and  filed charges against the person for obstructing duties of the government officials.

DIG Rohana said if the 56-year old suspect had failed to pay the compensation of Rs. 400,000, his jail term will be  extended by another two years.

Punishment too excessive. No balance in relation to the offence

    ravin Thursday, 21 January 2021 07:21 PM

Ram the offender had endangered few peoples lives. It is almost attempted murder. Therefore the punishment is too lenient. Please let us know, If it happened to you what is your reaction?

    Borat Thursday, 21 January 2021 06:29 PM

Good punishment can can everyone be served from same spoon rather than teaspoon and tablespoon

    nihal Thursday, 21 January 2021 07:44 PM

Punishment must equal the crime. Too excessive. Judes should take all factors into consideration when making judgments

    Saman Thursday, 21 January 2021 08:34 PM

    Gayan Thursday, 21 January 2021 08:56 PM

Same should be done for those who refuse to perform the tests. Send a few to jail and be sure everyone will fall in line.

When appointments of Judges were not considered on merit then how can Judges serve equal judgement?

    Sambo Thursday, 21 January 2021 09:10 PM

On what basis does the judges met out punishment. Small faults big punishments and large scale faults released on bail. What a country we live in. Enough he was not given life sentence, Poor Guy

While dammika bandara and his paniya are allowed to assault doctors and remain Scot free?

    lal Thursday, 21 January 2021 09:25 PM

The man deserves an appropriate punishment for his immoral behavior. At the same time chewing betal leaf in public places isn't an offence. People are still spitting betal salvia on the roads casing a health risk to the general public.

    Srilankan Thursday, 21 January 2021 09:28 PM

What is the punishment given to those escaped from the centers. Teaspoon or Tablespoon?

    Hassanda Thursday, 21 January 2021 09:33 PM

The Law is one sided in the Banana Republic Quite strange 6 years for spitting at an health Officer - its quite amazing never seen such a Harsh verdict for a petty offence

    Mandayan Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:00 PM

In a country where convicted murders are sitting in parliament and walking out with pardon, 6 years for spitting is too excessive.

    roni Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:01 PM

Bloody good these guys have no respect for others. The bus divers who chew beetle and spit to the road must be given the same treatment. Must have a disciplined society.

    Ramesh Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:02 PM

Is this crime more serious than a murder or an attempted murder?

    R.Jameel Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:22 PM

Better the punishment extended for 10 years, it's not only an individual's offence, it's an offence for the community, that's why the punishment must be more, he has made an impression that all people of atulugama are in his caliber

    Dee Friday, 22 January 2021 02:58 AM

    Please pardon the offender.

    Hamid Friday, 22 January 2021 04:59 AM

Good verdict,he behaved as he is above the law, this arrogance is mainly due to illiteracy and political backing, whole world think Srilankans are rude and uncultured lot

    Buddhist Friday, 22 January 2021 05:14 AM

Looking at this judgement one will wonder if the judgement on this and Ranjan's are sane decisions!

    sandaruwan Friday, 22 January 2021 07:03 AM
