Lab to test medicinal drugs to be set up: PM

The government is making arrangements to set up a laboratory to test the quality of medicinal drugs, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

At an event held at Temple Trees on Thursday to hand over appointment letters to recruits to the Health Ministry, Mr. Rajapaksa said there have been numerous allegations regarding the drugs imported in the recent past.

“There have also been allegations of bringing in medicinal drugs for prices three to four times higher the usual price. Therefore, it is vital to check the quality of drugs. We believe a pharmaceutical quality monitoring laboratory should be established for this purpose and a programme is already underway in this regard,” he said adding that health officials have a responsibility to pay attention to these issues and provide a better service.

The PM thanked the Health officials for taking measures to prevent the coronavirus infection from spreading in Sri Lanka and to ensure that the Chinese woman who was infected with the virus recovered properly.

Nearly 1,360 appointment letters were handed over to officials across several fields in the health sector.

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, State Minister of Indigenous Medicine Priyankara Jayaratne, Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Health Ministry Secretary Bhadrani Jayawardena and several other were present at this occasion.

Prime Minister, we should step up to be out of the third world. Instead of setting labs to check the imported drugs ,we should start producing them ourselves as generic drugs. The only countries in the world who have the capable Scientists to produce drugs are USA, Canada, Western Europe, Russia, and Japan. Other countries like China,Australia,Brazil, and India do not have the science to produce any drugs, instead they apply for the right to copy the original drugs from the drug makers and start to produce them after the patent for the drugs runout, these drugs are called the generic drugs. This is what we pay lot of money and buy from India. Let us apply for the right to copy the drugs, provided we have enough Sri Lankans with PhDs in Chemistry and Biology.

It should have been done ages ago. better late than never. Also remember to withdraw the vehicle used by Shiranthi which was onetime used by Mongol. That may contain many bacterias and viruses.

Drug Quality Control - Exactly 5 years back former Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senarathne said the same thing when they established the Yahapalana Government - A new Lab for drug quality control How many times we will hear the same? Any guess?
