The Government was attempting to install a Floating Storage Regasification Unit in Negombo without cabinet approval, MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera said yesterday.
He told a news briefing that the Government had already called tenders.
“Although this would be adopted as a solution to the energy crisis, it would not become such a move rather politicians would make advantages out of that,” Rathana Thera said.
“The project is assisted by Korea. I am wondering as to why we are seeking the assistance from foreign countries to find solutions to the energy crisis spending huge funds on them, when there are two gas discoveries in Mannar,” he said.
He said he was opposed to this and would hope to bring a Renewable Energy Act to Parliament in the near future.
Meanwhile, he said the prevailing political situation in the county seemed to be chaotic and thus no cabinet paper should be brought and passed.
“If cabinet papers are brought at the interest of the people, I have no issue with that. However, the Government should see that worthwhile cabinet papers being passed at the cabinet,” he added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
