A committee had been appointed to consider reforms to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act to the norms stipulated in international conventions, Cabinet Co-Spokesman Gayantha Karunathilaka said today.
He said as some provisions in the Muslim Law, including the minimum age of marriage, were not in conform with the norms stipulated in international conventions, which Sri Lanka was holding membership, and that it was necessary to amend those provisions.
While addressing the media Law and Order and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayake said the country had to obey the international conventions as in a situation like preparing to get the GSP +.
“Amending of the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act is also a part of international protocol, which is a requirement to obtain GSP +,” he said.
Accordingly, the proposal had been made by the Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to appoint a Cabinet Sub-committee to make proposals to the Cabinet regarding suitable amendments to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

I was born a Muslim and consider the Muslim Marriage and Divorce act discriminatory towards women. This act should be abolished and Sri Lanka must have one law for all Sri Lankans, and we should stop dividing communities on ethnic, religious, caste etc etc lines.What is good for the Goose should be good for the gander too. We don't need different laws for different communities, as this is just a joke.

It's vague the area they are going to amend. its important to amend right of the woman when the man fed up of woman divorce due to decline beauty, an abnormal sexual behaviour of the man ( i am this government will like this) . When the woman comes to know systematic child abuse of own children. These guys they just take the advantage of loophole of sharia law . I know most of men are God fearing and did not want to mess up the law (who are from good families ). Unfortunately, handfull of young men who are newly rich and impressed with clubbing life or Mothers's influence are taking big advantages of this law. you should disturb polygamy as its happens large scale in sri Lanka by all ( underground)
