Four Sri Lankan children suffering from thalassaemia major were cured of the disease through bone marrow transplantation in Bengaluru.

Children of ages, four, five, 10 and a 15-month-old baby were treated a month ago.

“The children could not find a match from their own families, so we had to go for unrelated donors. The chances of getting a match from unrelated donors are only 10% to 15 %,” said Dr Sunil Bhat, head of oncology and bone marrow transplant, Narayana Health City, who conducted the surgery.

He said the match for bone marrow for two of the children was found from the Indian registry of donors called Datri and the other two were from DKMS, a German registry.

The father of one of the children, who did not wish to be named, said that they struggled to find a match and since Sri Lanka did not have tie-ups with the registry, they had to look at other countries.(Deccan Herald)

The first successful heart transplant in Sri Lanka was done a few weeks ago. Gave a new life to a mother of three. Not enough for some it seems?

Thats what makes us proud of Dr's and not the idiots who give press conferences on behalf of politicians every week and go on strike killing the poor, making money doing private practice. You have degraded the profession.

Heart transplants is only new to Sri Lanka, but in many other countries it is a common medical activity. Just shows how backward we have become. We are a country that is famous and thrives on racism than any other important technological issue.

Jonny, can you mention the name of a single patient died because of doctors strike? And what is the wrong with doing private practice? No one is taking patient by-force to their channeling services. If you hate it then leave it and go to a government hospital. You can have free treatments there.

Buffalo Citizen, of course you have selected the suitable name for you. Only problem is comparing yourself to a buffalo is an insult to that animal as the buffaloes are much more intelligent than you. So do you think heart transplants are new to Srilanka because of doctors fault? Go to operation theaters of government hospital and see. Some theaters have shortage of supplies even for basic surgeries. Your bloody government keeps blind eye despite all the requests. If you read the story of this heart transplant case you will find that some of the supplies needed for the surgery were purchased with the main surgeons own expenses. You bloody colombian idiots have no gratitude for those things.

can the GMOA check if the doctors had their education in govt. or private medical colleges
