When the fundamental rights petition filed against the release of Royal Park murder convict Jude Shramantha was taken up by the Supreme Court today, the petitioners’ lawyers were asked to convey the notice to former president Maithripala Sirisena, who was named as a respondent, to appear in court on May 29.
The SC made this direction when the FR filed by an organisation named the Women’s Media Collective was taken up for consideration. The petitioners sought a court order to arrest the released suspect and imprison him.
The petition was considered before a three-judge bench comprising Judges Priyantha Jayawardana, Vijith Malalgoda and Gamini Amarasekara.
The SC also extended the interim order preventing Shramantha Jude Jayamaha, who was released on a presidential pardon, from leaving the country until June 1, 2020. (Thilini De Silva and Ranjan Katugampola)

If the killer who was given a Presidential pardon, has been allowed to escape from the country, what is the point in proceeding with the Case?
