The Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union (LEOU) have from midnight yesterday withdrawn from operating trains having Chinese compartments because of a fault in the brake system.
LEOU Secretary Indika Dodangoda said this matter had been brought to the notice of the General Manager Railways (GMR) and the Ministry during the tenure of the previous government.
“Some 100 Chinese-made compartments have been added to the train service. The GMR assured us he will not file any charge sheet in case of an accident because of the use of such compartments. However, after this government took office, the authorities have filed charge sheets for all previous accidents cause because of the use of such compartments," he said.
Mr. Dodangoda said there were about 200 incidents reported because of the malfunctioning brake system.
He said as a result of similar trade union action launched previously the railway administration gave an assurance to replace the current brake system but however, no action had been taken as yet. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Engine Drivers should be thankful to Chinese for supplying with faulty brakes. Imagine your plight, If they have supplied the compartments without wheels and need to be pushed to the destination?. Please be great full to the Chinese .

Minster for Railway tracks, Minister for Railway engines, and Minster for Railway carriages, stand up please.

Very true indeed. I have experienced travelling by train on these Chinese made railway carriages and they are horrible to say the least. The braking is so bad that passengers get jerked to the bone.

The Chinese Compartments were first introduced into Yarl Devi, the famed Jaffna Colombo train, in the 60s. We from Jaffna were very pleased to travel on these compartments because they were spacious and made the journey very smooth by well done shock absorbers attached to each compartment, testament to the Chinese Technology. Any Tamil who lived in Jaffna in the 60s and 70s would vouch for my statement.

The same union members visited India and bought useless train engines spending Rs 11 billions. These engines are in the yard now. These are too heavy to run our tracks. The protest may be sponsored by their Indian paymasters. Investigate this and see if what I say is incorrect.
