Covid-19 spread in Dalada Maligawa: SJB asks Health Minister to resign

The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) today called for the resignation of Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi saying she should take the blame for failure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka which had now affected the historical Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

SJB MP Manusha Nanayakara told a news conference that the Minister should resign from her post, given the latest development with regard to COVID-19, including the issue at Dalada Maligawa.

“Real statistics with regard to COVID-19 are hidden from the public. The total number of positive cases is higher than what is being reported. Many people, even those from Galle have been found positive through random PCR tests. However none of this is being reported,” Mr. Nanayakara said.

“The number of people who had succumbed to COVID-19 have exceeded the number of people killed in the Easter Sunday attack despite the assurance given by ministers that the Government will not allow the number of people who die from COVID-19 to exceed the number killed in April 21 attacks,” he added.

MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena said investigations should be carried out to determine if those at the Dalada Maligawa got the disease from the Ukrainian tourists who visited the place.(Yohan Perera)

Most likely, the government will deny the facts. Are you kidding, no government minister has ever resigned for his or her mistakes, incompetency or being a criminal or accessory to commit any illegal act in Sri Lanka.

The minister of health should have resigned long ago. In fact she has to be held directly responsible for misleading people by adopting and endorsing mythical solutions and going as far stating that Covid would be non existent by end of April 2020. But in this country when have we heard of a minister taking responsibility and resigning ?

No health minister in any government of any other country has resigned due to spread of covid 19. That is not the solution. I am not saying that this health minister is good. She has the same problem like other politicians i.e. promising the impossible and announcing the plans not actions. If people take enough precautions, they can avoid infection.
