Opposition MP S.M. Chandrasena yesterday requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to reconsider a decision to take legal action against MPs who are accused of behaving in an unruly manner in parliament in November last year.

The report of the committee appointed to look into the unruly incidents that took place in the House on November 15, 16 and 17, 2018 had found several MPs-both opposition and government-responsible for the incidents.

Addressing a news briefing at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) office, MP Chandrasena said the Speaker was wrong for attempting to take legal action against their MPs.

“We saw how the Speaker himself behaved when these incidents were taking place, violating parliamentary traditions as well as the constitution. We heard that our names are also among the list of wrongdoers. The Speaker should look at what takes place in parliaments in other countries as well. In Brazil, MPs once smashed heads but no one was taken to court. Such incidents had occurred in our old parliament too. It is not like we attacked each other with chairs. Therefore, taking these aspects into consideration, we request the Speaker to consider if its justifiable to take our MPs to court,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Law makers must be above board. We do not require hooligans to use thuggery in parliament or anywhere else. These guys must be subject to lws of the country.

Property damage and, the ones who were elected to be an example displayed their standards of their values and behaviour. These standards they displayed need be considered and judged by the same ones appointed and accepted by those who voted for them in the first place. If they cannot defend their behavior then they get treated just like anyone else

Hon speaker is right. All the people should be same under the law. Being someone is a parliamentarian he has no right to go against the law , ethics and our culture.
