Any COVID-19 vaccine will not be tried in Sri Lanka until WHO officially approves it, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa told Parliament yesterday.

Minister Rajapaksa who was speaking during the second reading debate of the budget said, Sri Lanka will not try any vaccine until it is globally accepted.

Mr. Rajapaksa was responding to a comment made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa who blamed the Government for not making arrangements to import the COVID-19 vaccine. “Sri Lanka should place orders for the vaccines like the other countries,” Mr. Premadasa said.

“Neither the WHO nor any other country has approved any COVID vaccine yet. Therefore it is not possible for Sri Lanka to get it and distribute it in such a situation. We cannot allow Sri Lankan people to be used as Guinea pigs for vaccine testing,” Minister Rajapaksa replied.

He recalled that it was the previous regime which allowed testing of Cancer and Thalassaemia medicines on Sri Lankan people. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

As if the GOSL adhere to the WHO regulations. Do not try to fool all the people all the time. With regard to the COVID 19 last rites of the dead bodies, WHO has given clear instructions that the dead can be buried or cremated but here in SL only forced cremation is taking place. Now you guys are talking about WHO approval for the vaccine. Good Joke of the Year

Very good Namal, I’m sure you will let WHO know that the unique nation of Sri Lankan’s will not be sacrificed for testing of vaccines. They will have to make sure the vaccine is 100% safe by testing them on other nationals as the proud nation who elected the most effective government in the world led by our Rajapaksha family will only use the vaccine if it’s only 100% safe. For your information foolish western nations have volunteered in thousands for testing programs across the world.

What is the role of Sports Minister in making statements related to Health Care. Is he overstepping into other's area because he is the son of Prime Minister. A clear violation of protocol.
