Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekera has lodged a complaint with the Police against Attorney at Law Manoj Gamage over an alleged threat.
Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said the CID Director had lodged the complaint at the Fort Police Station stating that the attorney had threatened him during a press conference on Saturday.
“The lawyer who hold a press conference with regard the case against Dr Mohamed Shafi of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, has allegedly threatened the SSP Abeysekera that he would need to wear the jumper,” he said
SP Gunasekera said that SSP Abeysekera was the leading investigating officer in the case against Dr Mohamed Shafi and according to the Victims and Witness Protection Act he could not be threatened, the Spokesman said.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Considering the lawyer in question is someone who said that the october coup was legal and constitutional..... the director is well within his rights and keeping with the law by filing a complaint. That lawyer should be disbarred

"“The lawyer who hold a press conference" - Never heard of - when a case is pending, can this be done. Can an interested party run through what has been been said. Im sure that "contempt of court" charges can be filed.

The CID director is right in taking the legal route on this issue. He could've threatened back but instead he has shown civility.

You should do what you would do to an ordinary citizen if he/she has threatened your officers. You don't need witness protection, this is obstruction of justice preventing officers from doing their duties. However, I don't say "threatened the SSP Abeysekera that he would need to wear the jumper,” is very serious matter.
