A Flydubai Boeing aircraft has suffered a bird strike while landing at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) this morning resulting in a flight delay of more than six hours, a Flydubai spokesman said.

He said the flight carrying 166 passengers landed at the MRIA at 7.15 am and departed at 14:32  pm and that an engineer from the Jet airways had to be called in to MRIA to attend to the aircraft as engineers from the SriLankan airlines were not permitted to attend to repairs of Boeing aircraft.

“Flydubai flight FZ551 from Colombo to Mattala experienced a bird strike on landing at Mattala Airport. As a result, the return flight from Mattala to Dubai was delayed by 6 hours and 42 minutes and passengers were provided with refreshments in the terminal. We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused to their travel schedules,” the spokesperson said.

Birds come and hit the airplane or elephants walk on to the runway breaking security fences, why. Because we have invaded the territory of animals and birds and built an airport in a wrong place.

    A. Jayasinghe Monday, 02 April 2018 07:28 PM

Please don't display your idiocy and malice. Bird strikes happen in most parts of the world. There has been no elephant strike. Have you been dreaming or are you just making up ?

Migratory Path Monday, 02 April 2018 09:21 PM

@A. Jayasinghe, Do your research before making yourself look stupid in front of everyone.

    Lal Monday, 02 April 2018 09:38 PM

Sri Lanka is the only country that had to use the military to chase elephants from an airport

    Dave Monday, 02 April 2018 09:39 PM

There are over 13000 bird strikes annually in the USA alone..you ate an idiot all right..but don't display it..

    Yakadaya Monday, 02 April 2018 11:47 PM

The Tom Hanks movie "Sully" is based on the real life New York City (Manhattan) event of "Miracle on the Hudson" a few years ago, caused by Bird Strike.

Very True. We have disturbed their freedom.

13000 bird strikes in the US where there are millions of aircraft. How many aircraft land at Mattala each day?

    Unchikun Monday, 02 April 2018 05:52 PM

Oh! the poor bird. Lucky it was not an elephant on the runway.

    ANTON Monday, 02 April 2018 06:01 PM

I THINK MR WILL BE MORE DELIGHTED WITH THIS BIRDIE.

If these billions of loan money would have invested in right place for right thing, today millions of income generated and million of people benefited. What a waste of money. No one is answerable for these politicians madness.

    OMG Monday, 02 April 2018 06:05 PM

In west, if a politician make mistake they will step down from their position. in sri lankan we again beg them to become leader. Banana republic.

    Arjuna Monday, 02 April 2018 06:07 PM

Building an airport near a bird sanctuary is a permanent danger for the air passengers and death for migrating birds!

    Dee Monday, 02 April 2018 07:05 PM

Why on earth did we build an airport in a jungle?

    Observer Monday, 02 April 2018 08:19 PM

This is aircraft strike on poor birds in their own land.

When ever the ALevel exam results are out,the first question that is asked about a school is how many students are entering the University to study Engineering or Medicine from that school. But the reality is not matching at all with the hype given to these professions.Sri Lankan Engineers do not play any leading role in the mushrooming of mega projects going on across Sri Lanka. All projects are led by foreign Technologists and Engineers. Now even to do minor mechanical work on Air Crafts flying into Sri Lanka, these Sri Lankan Engineers are not permitted to go near the Boings, yet the second rate Indians can repair both the Boing and the Airbus.

    Roshan Tuesday, 03 April 2018 08:47 AM

Don't you understand all our Aircraft are from Airbus and we do not have any Boeing Aircraft. So our Aircraft engineers are not trained to repair these Boeing Aircrafts.

    Joker Tuesday, 03 April 2018 11:09 AM

Mr Roshan,So if the air craft had been an Airbus then our Engineers would have been allowed to go near the air craft ? No I don’t think you have the expertise in Sri Lankan Engineers.

Lets all agree that the number of Strikes carried out in Sri lanka by Government Departments and the Freely Educated University undergrads is far greater than the Bird Strikes taking place in Humbugthota.

    Ganesh Tuesday, 03 April 2018 04:58 PM

Engineers from Sri Lankan airlines were not permitted to attend the repairs means if they are not fit for the job or suspicisious after Kandy riots and the subsequent lackadaisical action by the government.
