A total of 915 Sri Lankans had been awarded dual citizenships by the Internal and Home Affairs Ministry yesterday.
Accordingly, Sri Lankan expatriates living in the USA, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark and Sweden claimed dual citizenships.
The Ministry said dual citizenships had been awarded to Sri Lankan expatriates since 1987.
However, after the 2015 Presidential Election, a new system had been introduced to awarding dual citizenships.
The Ministry said a total of 36,995 Sri Lankans had been issued with dual citizenships on 24 occasions, including the Saturday's award ceremony.
Minister Vajira Abeywardena said the dual citizenship programme should be developed further.(Darshana Sanjeewa)

yes in 1987 it was Rs.5000 and you needed to show your commitment and solid contribution to sri lanka and JRJ signed the certificates. we need to be cautious however to screen tiger remnants who have re-ignited the issue of separation in sri lanka and instigating the issue.
