30-month jail term for CPC Chairman

Kandy High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundera sentenced Central Provincial Council Chairman Mahinda Abeykoon (Sri Lanka Freedom Party) to two and a half years rigorous imprisonment, after being found convicted for offences under the Penal Code of the Parliamentary Elections Act No: 01 of 1981.

The High Court Judge, delivering the judgment said the first count called for six months rigorous imprisonment, the second count a further one year rigorous imprisonment and the third count for one more year.

High Court Judge Wijesundera was specially assigned to hear this case in which 14 persons were indicted under the Parliamentary Elections Law Act. (L.B.Senaratne and J.A.L. Jayasinghe)
