Former head of the Presidential Security Division (PSD) SSP Nihal Karunaratne (Rtd.) was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for ten years by the Colombo High Court for obstructing duties of a Police Officer in 2000.

The Colombo High Court Judge Kumuduni Wickremesinghe also imposed a fine of Rs.25,000 and ordered SSP Karunaratne to pay Rs. 300,000 to the complainant police officer Hettiarachchi Samudrajeewa as well.

SSP Karunaratne was the head of the PSD during the time of President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

In February 2, 2000, then PSD Chief Karunaratne threatened SI Hettiarachchi Samudrajeewa while the policeman was trying to carry out his duties to arrest some criminals.

On this occasion, Samudrajeewa who at the time was OIC, police special team at Peliyagoda acting on a tip off and on the instructions of his superior DIG O. K. Hemachandra entered Baddegana Sanjeewa’s house to apprehend some wanted criminals. Karunaratne had arrived on the scene and threatened Samudrajeewa and obstructed the cop from carrying out police orders.  (TFT)

    kaputakukula Saturday, 26 March 2011 05:45 AM

This NK is another example that those wield power abuse some day will have their turn - only time matters. This chap was a feared king when he was holding the PSD position.

    kaputakukula Saturday, 26 March 2011 05:52 AM

Be happy Nath, at least we saw a piece of justice stil breathing in this country - Is it justice or... I thought justice in SL died a few years ago and already cremated.

    Chitraguptan Saturday, 26 March 2011 06:05 AM

I am banging my head on the wall here..... Coz.. alomost all those who commented here are thinking that Nihal is going to prison for two year. Deal folks ! he has been given only suspended sentence. Meaning he will be sent to jail only if he repeats the same offence within next ten years. I am Flabbergasted by the intelligence of our people.

    tharanga Saturday, 26 March 2011 06:21 AM

No worries, next term you can impose a RI to those who led u to RI. wait for a few years.

    Jagath Saturday, 26 March 2011 07:21 AM

    Suspended sentence on AG"s oreders????

Nina Kamal Saturday, 26 March 2011 12:23 PM

The beauty of all this & that is; they will be held, questioned and sentenced only once they are out of power.. while in power - even stray dogs are kept away!!! Shame on our system

    Sam Friday, 25 March 2011 09:26 AM

Hope that these type of judgments will be meted out the Politicians too. The Police is bad, but the Politicians are worse.

    spark Friday, 25 March 2011 07:19 AM

Ordinary citizens face daily abuse by police, military personnel and the powerful and keep quiet about it due to the drastic repercussions of making a complaint. No law is adopted to find legal justice and protection for such persons. This case has seen justice because the accused and complainant both have the umbrella of security from any threat.

Oyage sudu kella Friday, 25 March 2011 07:13 AM

APO... don't talk about our Police. The worst in the world.

    Uglytruth Friday, 25 March 2011 07:26 AM

What Nihal Karu. should have done was strengthen president's hands...if so AG will dismiss the case... best example is R.Duminda Silva.

    Somapala Friday, 25 March 2011 07:26 AM

People Alliance Colombo District Parliamentarian Duminda Silva who was accused to have raped an under-aged girl was discharged from the charges by the Colombo High Court today.
