A total of 2,590 people were killed in 2,481 road accidents during the past eleven months, the National Council for Road Safety (NCRS) said.

NCRS Chairman Dr. Sisira Kodagoda said accidents involving motorbikes and the number of pedestrian deaths had increased drastically with 1,011 people getting killed in accidents involving motorbikes while 792 pedestrians were also killed.

“The increase of such accidents can be attributed to incorrect overtaking, high-speed driving and riding, failure to follow road signs and not adhering to road rules as a whole,” Dr. Kodagoda said.

According to the report, an average of eight persons are killed while nearly 20 become permanently disabled every day as a result of road accidents. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Reckless driving on every single road on a daily basis . Many drive without any consideration of road rules! They are so selfish on the road and will do the wrong thing and come to put part also. Cops are usless. They only know to turn a blind eye and off the colour lights to creat a mess a because they are too uneducated

The Sri Lanka Police is responsible for this. The traffic Police is now absolutely useless. Their only aim is to collect money only from fining motorists who cross the white line on lonely roads. The reckless drivers are having a field day all over the Island. Look at the Colombo pavements, it has become a parking area and the pedestrians have to walk on the road. Why is the Police ignoring this?Over to you, IGP.

If three wheelers , motorcyclists and erant bus driver disciplined , there could 30 to 40 % less fatal accidents .and other accidents also .

Speeding and reckless driving is contributing to all of the incidents. Parking incorrectly is another hazard that contributes to the problem. Many sri lankans are known to be impatient, selfish, unruly and dishonest individuals behind the wheel. Even the newly widen roads do not have proper and enough designated parking areas to support the demand. These speeding motorist unruly 3wheelers and the motorcycles at times drive on the pavement would make the pedestrians feels uneasy and are a threat to the civility. It is the police that will not enforce the laws, they can only wait around to see if someone commits a minor violation ignoring the one's who is a driving threat, even that is not enforced everywhere equally. No one has any interest doing their assigned duty. This is sri lanka an island of parasites.
