The trend of identifying COVID patients in the country seemed to be going out of hand at present, Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) President Dr. Padma Gunaratne said.

Addressing a media briefing, she said the authorities should take this seriously and take pertinent action without further delay in order to nip this at the bud.

“When 1,800 plus COVID patients are detected daily, there are three to four times that number undetected in the community,” she underlined.

“As the number of COVID patients increases, the bed and ICU capacity in hospitals gradually reduce. The hospitals have almost reached their full capacity and consequently, some COVID patients have to remain at their homes due to the delays in taking them to hospitals.

Therefore, Dr. Gunaratne said health authorities should provide people with sensible knowledge as to how they should quarantine themselves at home.

Moreover, she also pointed out that when a family member gets contracted with the virus, the possibility of other family members getting infected is dramatically higher than the last time.

“This is due to the high transmissibility of the new variant spreading in the country unlike the previous one,” she said.

Dr. Gunaratne also raised the importance to impose travel restriction as the number of patients is increasing alarmingly. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

What do you expect from such an undisciplined society and their leaders. Obviously, nothing was done to contain the pandemic .

    Roisin Tuesday, 04 May 2021 07:22 PM

Finally the experts are giving the floor. The government must have realised now what a mess they have made and look at India as a warning. So give the army commander another toy medal and let him play with his toy soldiers at home.

Mass vaccines, mask mandates, social distancing and stop gatherings/partying, if the country wants to control this Pandemic.

Senior Citizen Tuesday, 04 May 2021 08:17 PM

Only around 9 lakhs of out of those who need to be vaccinated have been given the first dose. Now the talk everywhere is about giving the second dose. All the Medical Specialists and others in charge of the Vaccination programme seem to be unaware that the majority of the population who need to be vaccinated are even without the first dose. Does not the Govt .feel that their project is a complete mess ?

Mike Revere Wednesday, 05 May 2021 04:50 AM

Get Covax as many have already got first dose. As Sputnik availability is more assured, get large amounts of it for first timers in rest of country and hurry up. Don't crazily mix. Sinu not approved.

    Niraj Wednesday, 05 May 2021 05:57 AM

The government failed to source the vaccine from Pfizer, Moderna or Astra from reliable suppliers. sinopharm has efficacy of 52% as good as the Dhammika paniya,.
