Villagers ask politicos to stay away

Residents of some areas in Dimbulagala, Manampitiya and Aralaganvila have prevented political party or independent candidates from entering their villages because they have not been provided with basic facilities like electricity and access roads, an election monitoring group said today.

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said residents of Veheragala, Weeralanda, Kuda Sigiriya and Ihala Yakkara had put up black flags to protest the failure by political authorities to provide electricity to these villages.

PAFFREL monitors said a banner, has been put up at the entrance to the villages saying no candidate is allowed to step into any house to canvass for votes.

Meanwhile the United National Party (UNP) has informed PAFFREL about incidents of election law violations in the Hambantota district where the pasting of posters were taking place on a large scale. (KB)

Villagers do not have any rights to stop any body entering their villages. If anybody doing illegal activities they should inform to police. If they do not want to vote they can refrain from voting. Democracy should be in villages too. CITIZENS DO NOT TAKE LAW INTO THEIR HAND.
