The United States has welcomed the decision by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to pardon convicted journalist J. S. Tissainayagam.  The US Embassy in Colombo said that it is fitting that the announcement came on World Press Freedom Day, which celebrates the vital role a free media plays in every democracy.

Tissainayagam was earlier convicted on three counts including editing, printing and distributing the publication North Eastern Monthly magazine during the period between June 1, 2006 and June 1, 2007. He was arrested in March 2008 and released on bail in January this year.

"Pardon," for not doing anything wrong?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 04:38 AM

although pardoning tissa is a good move, why should the usa care? sri lanka can handle its own affairs better than us.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 03:25 AM

Well US will welcome the release of any LTTE terrorist because US was one of the biggest funders of the LTTE. They will only oppose the release of a Al Qaida or Taleban terrorist.

Oh what a pity, we sinhalese would not want it like this. We would have preferred the tamil Tissanayagam to be harrassed forever.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 01:57 AM

Manidha Rajapaksa had to parodon Mr. J. S. Tissainayagam because Mr. Obama had made a direct reference to Mr. J. S. Tissainayagam when talking about Press Freedom. U.S can really do lot more to bring justice to minorities in Sri Lanka if they put some more effort in this small country.

grabbing the media freedom is against the voice of a community. why only North East magzine cannot function when their are so many magazines functuning in the south. is that democracy allowed only for a section of this country ???

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 12:46 AM

"North Eastern Monthly magazine" a true voice of the north east people to the outside world and is purposely blocked by the govt for their own gains.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 12:36 AM

Well said Dr. Mark. I agree totally with your comments. As for the retorts by some; they see a conspiracy under every bush. So one could safely ignore their ignorance.

Thanks USA, better this sinking island along with their best friend iran

To begin with, Mr. J.S.Tissainayagam committed no crime to be apprehended, held in custody and unjustly sentenced to twenty years in prison. He is now being 'pardoned' as if doing him a great favour. HE SHOULD BE EXONERATED AND COMPENSATED FOR ALL THE HUMILIATION HE HAS SUFFERED.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:32 PM

Pardon does not mean he has won his case.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 07:23 PM

Worried about the UN investigation and trying charm one's way into the Western world?

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 06:18 PM

Tissa did not do anything wrong, to be pardoned by the President.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:26 AM

Good one. Hopefully we should see more of such acts by the President in order for us to win back our lost reputation as a country that respects media freedom.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:04 PM

Dr Mark is not correct but you agree with him blindly as you support govt blindly.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 03:09 PM

Thissanayagam wrote for Terrorists pushing terrorist agenda on received funds from terrorists. Why pardoned him?

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 01:38 PM

this is to please European union, get back GSP, must release
the General if government is sincere

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 01:03 PM

When can we see you in the States, Tissa?

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 12:10 PM

It is always easy to catch an innocent soul, frame some charges, imprison him and then wait for some suitable occasion and give him a pardon to get some political mileage out of that action. These are all stage-managed dramas.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 11:07 AM

Dr. Mark you are 101% correct and agree with him.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 11:05 AM

Serious allegations? What serious allegations? That he planned a coup? Did you not know that the Court Marshall for this has been suspended. Do you seriously believe that the General was planning a coup.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:55 AM

    well said Sena

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:51 AM

In the coming days everything else will fall in line as there is going to be another term for the President and then pave the way to the sibling. This is politics, my friend.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:39 AM

Dr Mark or whoever it is, Did you not know that SF had serious allegations. He was pointing the finger at others when his house was corrupt and his son-in-law has gone missing. Does that not tell you a story? It is good for SF to know that he cannot make allegations when he has blood in his hands.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:33 AM

IF HE DID WRONG,WHY PARDON HIM. WHY NOT PARDON GENERAL FONSEKA?.MORE SERIOUS CHARGESS ARE THERE FOR MANY OTHER GOVERNMENT POLITICIANS THAN THE GENERAL. WHY NOT CHARGE THEM?.EVEN IF GENERAL DID DO SOME WRONGS,THAT'S NOTHING COMPARE TO HIS SERVICESS TO THE COUNTRY TO ELIMINATE TERRORISM.PRESIDENT,COL GOTABAYA,ALL ARMED SERVICESS CHIEF COMMANDERS,STF AND POLICE CHIEF ARE DESERVE THE RESPECT FOR DSTRUCTION OF THE LTTE TERROR GROUP.LET THE GENERAL GO FREE.
