The opposition UNP staged a walkout from Parliament a short while ago after UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe gave a speech saying his party will not participate in the debate on the 18th Amendment.

Parliament sittings were suspended for 10 minutes following the walkout. The UNP members began a Sathyagraha campaign outside Parliament. (KB & YP)

Truth is Ranil does not want to keep his party members @ the time of voting tomorrow. He knows that most of them will vote with the government.

Smart Aleck Tuesday, 07 September 2010 11:53 PM

Ranil must have walked-out and taken a plane to Tamil Nadu?

    Wije Tuesday, 07 September 2010 11:03 PM

The only reason that the opposition is weak is because Ranil is still hanging-on to the coveted 'Leader of the Opposition' post!

    Lankawick Tuesday, 07 September 2010 11:03 PM

    RW, time to walk out!

    Lucky Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:10 PM

    The easy way out!

    Nan Tuesday, 07 September 2010 12:55 PM

This is why the opposition in this country has become weak.

    babu Tuesday, 07 September 2010 12:51 PM

    Ranil
Why did you not walk out when you handed over two thirds of our country to Prabakaran, under the orders of NoWay

    thushi Tuesday, 07 September 2010 12:39 PM

so the 5 or 6 remaining UNPers have walked out, they might at well go home sleep. Well done Ranils.

    Mohottige Tuesday, 07 September 2010 12:34 PM

Holman: Nothing of course. The constitution does not regulate that . Have you not read the amendments? If not how can you make comments?

    MK Tuesday, 07 September 2010 11:25 AM

Yeah!! Ranil must be sad that his term as the opposition leader will also be unlimited following the passing of this amendment!!

    Holman Tuesday, 07 September 2010 10:35 AM

What does the 18th Amendment say about the Opposition Leader's term ?

Sri Lankan Tuesday, 07 September 2010 10:34 AM

    Playing for the gallery.

    Aiya Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:46 AM

    More fireworks expected.

Nihal Fernando Tuesday, 07 September 2010 10:08 AM

Very weak opposition, stupid decisions and double acting by Ranil make the President's hands more and more stronger.

    DXB Tuesday, 07 September 2010 10:07 AM

True , but if some one asked him what is your term as opposition leader ? he has no answer and he is sure all ex unpers will raise this question.

    Babanis Tuesday, 07 September 2010 10:05 AM

It is not the right thing to walk out when debating a key issue. Politically bankrupt?

James Bond Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:58 AM

They are not doing their duty to the constituents. Their duty is to take part in the debate and to make their point. This way they help the ruling party to nail the coffin. What a bunch of idiots we have as politicians? May be we deserve this.

    DHA Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:54 AM

    Match Fixed ?

    Serenity Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:53 AM

    Better walk home!

    shavantha Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:52 AM

Ranil we are waiting for you to walk out of the party leadership

    sam Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:51 AM

Please do best as you can...

Said Hussein Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:50 AM

Very good and many others should follow Ranil.
The 18th amendment will further ruin the country.

    Said Hussein - UK

    Che Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:49 AM

HE IS FINISHED NOW, BETTER TO RETIRE,HE STILL HAS NOT GOT THE MESSAGE, UNP IS DEFUNCT BECAUSE OF HIS ATTITUDE,AND ARROGANCE.

    IrajCalifornia Tuesday, 07 September 2010 09:48 AM

They should have presented the facts related to why UNP is opposing it, ,may be after all the drama UNP also doesn't has any reasonable facts against 18th Amendment.
