The United National Front (UNF) will oppose the extension of the emergency when it is taken up for debate at a special session of parliament next week, UNF General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror Online.

The UNF which includes the main opposition the United National Party (UNP), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), Sri Lanka Freedom Party Mahajana Wing and the Democratic People's Front will voice its strong objection against the emergency especially at a time when the country has other issues to concentrate on, Attanayaka said.

“The government is clearly avoiding issues which they should be focusing on by extending the emergency,” Attanayaka said.

The JVP which will also attend the special session however remains undecided on whether it will oppose or accept the emergency next week.

JVP Member Anura Kumara Dissanayaka said that his party would hold a discussion on the matter soon in order to reach a decision. Both the JVP and UNP had opposed the emergency when it was taken up for debate just before parliament was dissolved last month.

Parliament will reconvene for a special session on March 9 to extend state of emergency by another month. Parliament was dissolved on February 9 in order to conduct General Elections next month but President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to convene a special session of the house next week to extend the State of emergency. Is it going to be back to square one between the UNP and the JVP? What a country! What politicians!

Seems a bit queer that the President says that there are now "no terror threats" and yet takes special pains to recall Parliament, so that Emergency Regulations may be revalidated ...

    Friday, 05 March 2010 07:08 PM

IF THE JVP DOES NOT VOTE AGAINST THE EXTENDING OF "EMERGENCY," THEY WILL HAVE NO RIGHT TO CRY-OUT IN PUBLIC, FOR ACTION TAKEN BY THE GOVERNMENT, UNDER "EMERGENCY" LAWS! "YOU CANNOT HAVE THE CAKE & EAT IT!" IF YOU ENDORSE "EMERGENCY," GET READY TO TAKE ITS BACKLASH TOO!

Nothing like it ("emergency") for easy governance, without accountability.

Sri Lanka is one the countries that calls itself as a democratic country while it rules the country under emergency rule for the last 30 years. How can one call it as a democratic country while it is ruled with an emergency rule? Any party that supports the extension of emergency rule should be considered as an undemocratic.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:50 AM

What you mean by the legitimacy of abstaining? The word emergency itself doesn't fit for this extension of 'special law'- to rule bypassing some existing laws- detention without trial etc., as it is passing the third decade continuously!

JVP, SAHODARAYAS, IF YOU DONT OPPOSE, YOU CAN BE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AS SF SUPPORTERS UNDER SOME PRETEXT BY GOSL.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:42 AM

Don't shout! Nothing going to change.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:42 AM

LTTE is no longer threat since our Maharajano has eliminated LTTE 100% thnx to master brain of his bro GOTA.

No threat of suicide bombs since master brain mr. PRABAKARAN is no longer alive

No threat to MR government of any coup b'cos the master brain to topple the government , mr. Sarath Fonseka also in safe custody

As per MAHINDA if all these threats are well under his control then what else is there to be scared off......don't tell me it is RANIL ##**@@!!

Now the war is over, the Government should be able to run the country under the normal law. We don't see any reason why the Emergency be continued.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 08:41 AM

Emergency DNA test to be done by done by JVP to seek the legitamacy of Opposing/Supporting/Abstaining.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:05 AM

We are confused over emergency situation in the country. On one hand government boasts that they rooted out LTTE and concluded the war and gave a violent free country to Sri Lankans. On the other hand government is going to extend the emergency. Please explain to the country whether LTTE movement is still active in the country or not. They cannot have yes and no both.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 09:55 AM

Why should there be emergency now? Emergency is necessary to commit atrocities against the opposition.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 09:42 AM

lets have some common agreement among the opposition. !

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 09:23 AM

If JVP does not oppose the extension of emergency , they deserved to be taken in by the same regulations.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 09:19 AM

If the government is so boastfull about the present climate in the country why else do we need a state of emergency?

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 08:59 AM

why do they need to extend the emmergency to abduct more journilst and people who supported SF??

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 08:58 AM

They have opposed even when Colombo was burning.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 08:53 AM

All right thinking politicians should vehemently oppose the extension of the Emergency, as the regulations are now being misused to harass the opposition.

    Bold move.good one
