Petroleum resources Minister Susil Premajayantha said the government will pursue attempts to sell gas to the consumer via the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPS) instead of via the Laugfs gas company.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online, the minister said that the arrangement between the CPC and Laughs Gas Company had lapsed and therefore CPC has taken measures to refer it to the Attorney General.

“The arrangement between CPC and Laugfs Gas Company has lapsed and the CPC wants the right to sell gas without the involvement of a third party. We have referred this matter to the Attorney General and he will appeal to the Supreme Court,” he said.

However, Chairman of Laugfs Holdings Limited, W.K.H Wegapitiya, when contacted by Daily Mirror online, said that the arrangement between the Government Corporation and Laugfs was indefinite as it is a court order.

He further added that CPC should work on improving their core business instead of selling a by product.

Two years ago, when the arrangement between the CPC and Laughfs gas company ended, CPC sought the right to sell gas which is produced as a by product at the oil refinery.

However, Laughfs gas made an appeal against it to the Supreme Court and the court ordered that Laughfs should be reinstated to sell gas. (Daily Mirror online)

Hardly any government enterprise is profitable even where they have a monopoly. The government should keep their hands off of business.

This could be good for people if they can purchase gas at low rates, though it could demotivate the investments. However the government should make sure that the quality of the product is maintained properly..

Let it go as it is Susil. You have aboslutely no capabilities even to run a road side shop. We all know the records you have kept when you were the Education Minister.
