Maybe implementing George Orwell's "1984" for the Big Brother to watch !

    Monday, 17 May 2010 04:58 AM

Pls ensure the cameras are designed to capture all those who break the law, especially those red and white WPC number vehicles and vehicles which have heavy tint on the top and bottom of the front windscreen as well.(even if the camera captures, they will not be able to see who they are isnt it?- another blimey excuse for the law makers)

    Monday, 17 May 2010 04:58 AM

MAKE SURE THE CCTV IS PROTECTED FROM HOOLIGANS/DRUG ADDICTS- THEY CAN REMOVE THEM OFF-

    Monday, 17 May 2010 05:14 AM

This is a good move. But we need to ensure that they are not misused or abused. Camera footage may go mysteriously missing when it involves some political supporters of the gov. Let that not happen.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 05:30 AM

This is a good point to say that Sri Lanka is going towards development. Great well done!!!!!

    Monday, 17 May 2010 05:40 AM

How funny? Are the CCTV cameras the main problem in Colombo city? first, set up a proper drainage system. Today also I had to remove shoes and walk to office. I hope to sell the car and buy a boat. :D

    Monday, 17 May 2010 06:02 AM

I would say Dubai has the best surveillance and security system in the whole Asia ,non of the criminal escaped after doing a crime here even its very rare in Dubai, it can be called as safest heaven.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 06:07 AM

If you throw cow dung on the lens of the camera, even the cutting edge technology will fail. So, you have to be careful of the creativity of our local criminals. If I hope the Monitoring Units of crimes will not privately contact the offenders for settling the issues. We should have at least three monitoring centres, monitoring each other. Otherwise, camera will be a chimera for the public funds..

    Monday, 17 May 2010 06:21 AM

Lol right !!! Which part of the gulfnews have you been reading???

    Monday, 17 May 2010 06:27 AM

U took the words out of my mouth !!! u r spot on man spot on.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 06:31 AM

We still have so many other problems and issues to solve. This is like putting the bull before the cart. Lets solve other critical issues than all these grandoise plans such as these cameras, reclaiming land in front of the Galle Face etc etc. These entail colossal expenses which we cannot afford right now. Maybe later when the economy improves and we have solved other critical issues.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 07:14 AM

it was shocking to read in yesterdays Sunday Times article which revealed that some of the bus drivers are under the influence of Marijuana or liquor while on duty. I had a narrow escape in the morning from a reckless driver and thank god I am alive today. great that the authorities are doing something. we wholeheartedly support this initiative,

    Monday, 17 May 2010 04:39 AM

We don't need cameras, we already know who the criminals are.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 07:41 AM

Camera's are good but i do not understand why you have to go to singapore for that ! we have well learned Eng and Software professionals ... ideally we should have taken the help from china ... at the end CCTV cameras mainly produced by them.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 08:30 AM

First things first. In a country with limited resources, Let us spend money to improve the quality of police officers and their perks to motivate them to do a better & a proffesional job, especially educate the police officers on their role,

    Monday, 17 May 2010 08:36 AM

    Good idea.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 08:39 AM

Agree. I think the point is; did all of the drivers went through the correct driving license obtaining proceedures? as we all know how to get a driving license without facing an exam or test! need proper driver licensing system nation wide!

    Monday, 17 May 2010 08:40 AM

My thoughts exactly. Very Orwellian. I can't help but feel a fearful of how such technology will be put to use. I have no idea why a trip to Singapore is required to learn the usage of surveillance in a city. Didn't we supposedly win a war with our tactical superiority?

Why not use technology and do webcam conferences to knowledge share. Save money..develop a village or two.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 08:41 AM

Hope my bro get support to do a good job. good luck!

    Monday, 17 May 2010 09:55 AM

What is the name of the company which is going to import and install the cameras? Mihin imports and exports or Lanka logistics?

    Monday, 17 May 2010 10:18 AM

Go to Singapore and see how they use CCTV and has a low crime rate. And how they use these footage to spot criminals quickly.
We need a good surveilance + good law enforcement like Singapore.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 11:07 AM

What would be the punishment for damaging the cameras? In Singapore for vandalism they cane on bare buttocks! Lashes of flailed belt!

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:08 PM

First develop the roads and the legal guidelines and then implement the project. Better use Sri Lankan 'brains' - we have plenty of professionals here.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 02:14 AM

I hope this would do good to the city of colombo. There are many thieves arround and they put the people in to a lot of trouble. :( :(

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:10 PM

Hope that the Government doesn't do the nasty thing of invading the privacy of citizens by fixing cameras inside toilets. That could happen by justification of security and by misusing the so called emergency law.

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:47 PM

Visit London where there are over 100, 000 CCTV cams in the city...... yet there r crimes taking place such as large scale robberies in daylight in Knightsbridge and Bond Street and stabbings in streets and underground stations such as in Victoria station where a school boy was stabbed to death by other school kids. one thing is common in all these crimes that is all were them were recorded in CCTV while most of the criminals are yet on the run.....

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 06:50 PM

This is an essential surveillance tool where evidence cannot be manipulated, which is another benefit. However to prevent
driving the crime to camera free areas, a wide coverage is essential. This will also monitor the efficiency of the Police.
    Progressive thinking.

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 07:09 PM

The president will have to appoint a Commission of inquiry to find out,as to how those surveillance cameras disappeared from the spots.!!

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 07:38 PM

Surveillance cameras will defiitely help us with our current economic situatuation! What is the RELAVANCE? It's like shopping for a nice outfit using credit card when you are hungry and broke.

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 10:04 PM

Nothing will work!!! Unless we change the people who are in charge of law and order in the country!!! They will find some means to defy the cameras!!!

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 11:15 PM

it has helped other countries to prevent minor offences
like traffic street side brawls. small drug deals big one has happened in New York recently when Pakistani terrorist tried to plant bomb in Times Square.
but in SL biggest crime is corruption and shakey deals by big bosses of crimes and politics, security camera won`t help much.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 01:10 AM

Why buy from Singapore? Closed Circuit TV Monitoring Technologies in China is at the prime stage, no crimes in major cities in China and a fraction of cost would be enough to populate Colombo with CCTV cameras for Police surveillance. It make more sense that Sri Lankan Police study Chinese crime stopping technologies.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 01:19 AM

Very good idea to bring the offenders to book. Hope the camera stay safe with no one pilfering them like they do the street lights

    Monday, 17 May 2010 01:47 AM

time for more spending on hardware and foreign trips for the police personnel with no results at all in the end.

    Sunday, 16 May 2010 05:49 PM

Cameras are fine. First educate the drivers to stop their vehicles before the signal post not after the post, mainly three wheelers and mo-bikes.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:11 AM

Should have done 20 years ago, like rest of the world. Any way congrats, at least started to install.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:21 AM

The best idea I have heard from the time of the Victory

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:27 AM

The Study tour will cost more then the equipment or maintenance of the Cameras!

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:32 AM

    Good move, go ahead

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:35 AM

Nice , we should have implemented this before.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:53 AM

Study the UAE system and the equipment installed. Its perfect. Recall the assianation of the Hamas Commander in Dubai. This proves the fact.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:56 AM

Good move! Only thing is, how to protect the cameras from our kuddas and what not!

    Monday, 17 May 2010 03:57 AM

    A good move.
We need Surveillance cameras in all major cities.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 04:00 AM

They should study the road system as well.

    Monday, 17 May 2010 04:23 AM

    Excellent move... good luck guys
