Samurdhi officers have decided to suspend their participation in dengue eradication programmes islandwide until disciplinary action is taken against Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva for tying a Samurdhi officer to a tree today.
President of the All Ceylon Samurdhi Workers Association Nishantha Udawatta speaking to Daily Mirror online said that all associations affiliated to the Samurdhi Authority have decided to support the strike and will also seek legal action against the Deputy Minister.
Deputy Minister Silva tied a Samurdhi Officer to a mango tree this afternoon over his failure to attend a dengue prevention programme in Kelaniya last week. (Daily Mirror online)

Dear samurdhi officers, what's the big fuss over MS's act. He wants to make the government employees work for a better purpose. Saving one of your beloved child from death. Isn't it a good work. Just imagine you are just going to lose your baby on dengue. How do you feel. He had to do it the way you people understand, no other way.

What's shocking is MR"s attitude. Country can't believe why he has a soft corner for this joker.
Lankan Expat Wednesday, 04 August 2010 07:03 AM
The good Dr. tied the official to the tree..
But did the action get rid of the Mosquitoes...
Seems like the good Dr. lost the wood for the trees...
Murshid Wednesday, 04 August 2010 07:02 AM
What the Minister did was correct. These Government servants are paid salaries to do their jobs properly, and it is the public who pays them through taxes, still they do not want to work or support public programmes. We Sri Lankans need people like Mervyn Silva, Wimal Weerawansa and others to attack the public and UN officials. Murshid

Bravo well done what ever the rights & wrongs of the samurdhi officer we have to deal with things in a civilised way .please Mr president take steps to discipline your minister
arshad Wednesday, 04 August 2010 05:54 AM
If an Officer has commited an offence , He should be tried in Courts and be alowed to defend him self . No one has the right to take the Law into there hands. This officer who was tied to tree has not been able attend since his child has been sick that particular day, Therefore the people who try to take the law into there hands should also think if any of there children are sick how will they react
CW Wednesday, 04 August 2010 07:14 AM
Answer is simple, President must take an immediate action & remove this idiot from the Parliament so that the innocents can live in peace.
Siripala D. Wednesday, 04 August 2010 05:30 AM
Do you notice that there are high ranking police officers in the scene doing nothing to prevent this gross abuse ? Do we have an IGP in this country ?

lankaman Wednesday, 04 August 2010 04:47 AM
You are stupid not to see the problem. Its not the Samurdhi officials with whom there is a problem, but stupid politicians like maruvin who don't let government officials do their duties properly. You are trying to change the pillow for headache. Grow up!!!

Merv is trying his best to be the MEGA STAR !
roshan Wednesday, 04 August 2010 08:07 AM
This is a clear example that what is prevailing in sri lanka is jungle law. Two mistakes doesnt make one right. What is really hearting is a considerable portion of people who commented above have accepted this as a normal thing and happy to live with it. No wonder why these type of people enter parliament with very high votes. Remember those countries that have a well developed public service did not achive that by this manner. Sri Lankans will never smell even the fragrance of what is real development with these type of people and politicians in our country
Concerned Citizen Wednesday, 04 August 2010 01:11 PM

Mr.Concern Wednesday, 04 August 2010 08:19 AM

Shan Wednesday, 04 August 2010 08:18 AM
MS good work. Start your punishment with all cabinet ministers. Tie all of them for not doing their job properly. Lol.
Poornima Wednesday, 04 August 2010 08:15 AM
People who dont work should be punished like this
perera007 Wednesday, 04 August 2010 04:17 AM
Well even if they convict someone it will be on some technicality where Mervin did not really tie the man to the tree... and the poor guy who did will go to Jail or be fined.
Holman Wednesday, 04 August 2010 08:06 AM
It is a good chance for 'Samurdi officers' to migrate. Sure US embassy will help them. 'Suba Anagathayak'.

this is not new in srilanka, now they call for strike, then president call the leader of strike and negotiate or threaten or giving some money , then problem solve
stupid country and people
Hettiarachchi Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:33 PM
This is totally an uncivilized work of this uncultivated notorious man. If a government officer or even any person has committed an offense there is a way of taking disciplinary or legal action against such person. I think the officer concerned should file a case asking for compensation. It is good that Samurdhi Officers have come forward against this uncivilized act.
siripala Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:29 PM
It is about time somebody stood up to this joker.
Surely the president can find somebody better than this thug.
SW Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:28 PM
It is high time that someone stood up to Mervyn Silva.
Nadarajah Sethurupan Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:26 PM

sinnan Tuesday, 03 August 2010 03:53 PM
Well done for your decision to take legal action, But think twice will you Succeed in legal action as Dr. will tie the judge in a banyan tree, then what will you Do?
Puran Tuesday, 03 August 2010 07:11 PM
The public sector in Sri Lanka is highly inefficient. No one is willing to work anymore. What Mervin did was right! A good lesson to other public sector employees, to work more efficiently to fulfil the public's needs.
Mahmood Ashraf Tuesday, 03 August 2010 09:24 PM
What I believe and know is that our government services personnel are not efficient in their duties and do not work according to international standards, so in a way, this would be a lesson for them!
paul Tuesday, 03 August 2010 09:14 PM
Well done minister! We need stricter laws, to get the work done!
raj Tuesday, 03 August 2010 09:03 PM
First, bear in mind what type of government you are dealing with.
Lanka Kumudu Tuesday, 03 August 2010 08:10 PM
I am sure that there are enough people to replace them!
Tharunaya Tuesday, 03 August 2010 07:27 PM
This is what the people voted for! Democracy is at work ... and who can argue against that?
Sri Lankan Tuesday, 03 August 2010 07:18 PM
If the Samurdi officers suspend their participation in dengue eradication programmes, the government should call-on the forces, to chip-in. And as for the Samurdi workers, they should not be paid! This is how the rest of the world works!
OneLanka Tuesday, 03 August 2010 07:13 PM
Ask not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for the country!
Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 03 August 2010 03:49 PM
Now the real fun starts ! It would be really interesting to see who is more powerful: the Samurdhi officers ? The deputy Minister ? or the MOSQUITOS !
Kaush Tuesday, 03 August 2010 06:02 PM
To me, public servants are the most pathetic group of workers in this country. Someone is, for once, standing-up and teaching them a lesson! The deputy minister might be going a bit too far, but I feel that public servants and university students should all be treated with the same 'stick'!
GK Tuesday, 03 August 2010 05:49 PM
Let's see how 'brave' these Samurdhi officials really are! Will they live-up to their 'noise'?
david Tuesday, 03 August 2010 05:17 PM
This is the only way to get them to work. Well done minister!
Lankan Macha Tuesday, 03 August 2010 05:15 PM
+ Ha .. Ha.. I am waiting for the next episode ...
Gunawardena Tuesday, 03 August 2010 05:06 PM
Can we tie-down a Parliament minister in same way??...
Marikar Tuesday, 03 August 2010 05:00 PM
GOOD MOVE!
All organizations should protest, & bring this LUNATIC to LAW!
He cannot do this to people.
Podi Guru Tuesday, 03 August 2010 04:57 PM
This sounds like 18th century British colonial rule. Why not put the errant officer in stocks in the middle of Galle Face Green? Then flog the man right before he is sent into exile.
