Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa told Parliament today that he would give his ruling tomorrow on the privilege issues raised by DNA Leader MP General Sarath Fonseka previously.

General Fonseka raised a question of Privilege again saying that he was not permitted by military officials to attend the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting yesterday.

General Fonseka said that he had the same problem earlier. On July 29, he said, a three-member Bench of Judges also ruled that his Parliamentary Privileges should be upheld.

“I regret that I have to raise the same Privilege Issue in the House over and over again,” he said.

General Fonseka sought the support from all Parliamentary colleagues across the party divide to ensure justice and fair play for him. The DNA leader tabled a copy of the Court Ruling given on July 29, in the House today.

“I think the business of this House has been devalued in this action by these military officers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga proposed that two privilege issues raised General Fonseka and UNP MP Palitha Thevarapperuma be referred to the Privilege Committee of Parliament. The House agreed unanimously on it.

The only respectable person in the government is the Speaker!

It won't make any difference: there are ways to over-rule those rulings just like they did it when it comes to Fonseka's participation in the Commonwealth Meeting. All eye-wash.

What is the guarantee that Mr. Speaker will not listen to the opinion of others to make the final decision?

According to the true spirit of parliamentary privileges, the speaker should give an impartial verdict on General Fonseka which will strengthen the democratic traditions of our parliament.I sincerely appeal to both the government and General Fonseka to use this opportunity to re-evaluate their political ideologies and arrive at a compromise to avoid diabolical consequences that may fall upon us if we try to maintain the status quo.. .

The only person who we can trust is Speaker and that will be last chance to show the world democracy. The present Army Commander should be punished as he is insulting the Court. If they can send SB to jail for the same Why not do the same to Present Army Comander Jayasuriya. If you do, the International world will see that there is Democracy. Send him to jail Commander Jayasuriya.
