Over 1900 suspects arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) will remain in custody despite some of the emergency regulations being relaxed recently, Prime Minister D.M Jayaratna told Daily Mirror online.

The Premier noted that while several regulations under the emergency law were relaxed the clauses pertaining to the arrest and detention of suspects under the PTA still remain and as a result those arrested under the act will remain in custody pending investigations.

Prime Minister Jayaratna also noted that the authorities will continue to carry out arrests under the PTA and detain the suspects for questioning. Under the PTA suspects can be arrested and detained for a period of time without being produced in Court.

The government recently announced a string of measures to relax parts of the emergency regulations as the war has now come to an end and as moves are being taken to bring about normalcy in the post war environment. (Daily Mirror online)

when a country that has constitution that discriminate/prefer its citizens based on their ethnicity, it is natural to expect some form of opponents against its ruling. Therefore, Sri Lanka will continue to rule the country under emergency regulations until its contitution refer its ctizens as Sri Lankans and irregard their race or religion.

What a surprise. Even the GSP 'carrot' doesn't get a decent response in this country. They release one guy and expect to get GSP+ back!
