President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to reprimand all eight UPFA members elected from the Kandy District following a recommendation by the disciplinary committee appointed to look into incidents that took place during the General election.

Informed sources said that the report, which was handed over to the President by the Committee members today, will summon all the Kandy MPs who contested from the UPFA to Temple Trees.

The President made this call after studying the report which was handed over to him by the disciplinary committee.

“The disciplinary committee handed over their report to the President at Temple Trees in which the committee has suggested that all eight members elected from the Kandy District should be summoned before the President and reprimanded,” sources said.

The disciplinary committee headed by W. Karunajeewa had summoned all the 15 candidates who contested in the Kandy District to the party headquarters and had recorded the details.

Subsequently members of the disciplinary committee had gone to Nawalapitiya and had met voters and election officers individually and recorded their statements.

General Secretary of the SLFP Maithripala Sirisena, Chairman of the disciplinary committee W. Karunajeewa, members D.P. Mendis, Saliya Methew and Champani Padmasekera are to participate at the occasion.

All eight should be removed from parliament. Arrangements should be made to accommodate the next in line. This would be a good lesson for all parliamentarians ...

Some millions of tax paid money was spent on the re-election in N'pitiya. No one is bothered about that ?

While reprimanding the culprits, public funds spent on this election should be recovered from those who created this situation. If reprimanding is the only punishment, these things could happen freely in the future.

No suggestion to recover the cost of re-poll. What a shame.....they do all the damages and misbehaviours and still get the cabinet portfolios. If we violate a traffic law without any damages still we have to pay fines. What a Wonderful Wonderful country this is.........

Reprimand ? After all the incidents which took place in the presidential election.

In order to set an example for the future MR must ask all MPs to appologise and must NOT give any ministerial positions.

If any of the perpetrators are given ministerial positions this report will be utterly useless (an eye - wash as stated by a former viewer). If MR will go ahead and give ministerial position then it will be serious let down

All may be PARTLY to blame. But surely some were more culpable than the others. The purpose of an inquiry must surely be to identify who the worst offenders were. THEY must be punished. Some others may rightly be able to claim that they were provoked.

IF MR wants show he is a true leader who acts against violence now is the time.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 07:43 AM

yes, Dave. Already the government has started hitting the poor below the belt with increase in prices of foodstuffs and gas. This is only the beginning.
