The Democratic National alliance (DNA) claimed today that its leader General (ret) Sarath Fonseka did not need the Defence Ministry’s permission to attend Parliament on the 22nd of April. This was after it was reported that Defence Ministry permission was needed for the General’s participation.

DNA Member and Former JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake speaking to journalists, stated that persons who are in charge of him at the Navy Headquarters, where he is currently being detained, are bound to allow him to participate in the Parliament according to the law.

The Military Spokesman Bring. Prasad Samarasinghe had earlier made a statement that Defence Ministry permission was needed for General Fonseka to participate in the inaugural sessions of the House.

Dissanayake also said that General Fonseka’s name had been included among those elected members whose names have been gazetted. (YP)

    Monday, 19 April 2010 06:51 PM

Mr Anura Kumara, which world are you living-in now? In Sri Lanka, only the Defence Secretary can take the final decision ...

    Monday, 19 April 2010 02:47 PM

We will wait and see how Buddhism works in this country!

    Monday, 19 April 2010 09:48 AM

SF may be in the list but it will depend on the court martial hearing. If found guilty, he cannot enter parliament obviously.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 08:53 AM

    Monday, 19 April 2010 07:24 AM

JVP are number 1 culprits in this country.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 06:57 AM

Parliament is Supreme. Defense Secretory and his minister is answerable to parliament.
May be with the 2/3 majority the govt can change the constitution otherwise. But until then the present constitution and the rule of law stands (hopefully).

    Monday, 19 April 2010 06:00 AM

machang! Then who is KARUNA?PILLEYAN? are they saints if traitors like you think General is a criminal. Please don't go down to that third grade level.Open your eyes & live.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 05:45 AM

so what, general is under obligation and he should adhere to the military rule.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 04:27 AM

JVP has only the SF card to play now. This has failed in all districts in the country with only 5 seats won. Drowning JVP is clutching on to a straw.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 04:15 AM

If he has to get the permission from Defence Ministry then he should have obtain permission to file his nomination paper. Now he is selected by the public vote.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 04:12 AM

Keep on talking nonsense, otherwise people will forget that JVP ever existed.

    Monday, 19 April 2010 04:11 AM

SF is a criminal. He should not enter the parliemnt. Impose death sentence

    Monday, 19 April 2010 03:53 AM

    I know the law.MP

    Monday, 19 April 2010 02:56 AM

general, general, general.. JVP, dont you really have any other issues in this country???

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 11:03 AM

Mr Anurakumara, dont expect more and more things according to Law, Because this is Sri Lanka, Family law rule the country.

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 11:10 PM

22 Armories of Sinha regiment Headquarters sealed.Still worried of the man or just trying to create a hype of a non existent threat to bluff the masses.I think we need to help the government to find some excuse to keep the general in detention as the authorities are failing miserably in that respect. It is sad why Hon, President cannot be a statesman and graciously pardon and let this episode finish and carry on with our mission to fulfil the aspirations of all Sri Lankans, rather than getting embroiled in a unnecessary scandal which is loosing it's credibility day by day.The slip is clearly showing when ever the military spokesman is on show and struggling with it all !!

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 09:12 PM

I DO NOT TRUST M.R. GOV .SO LET US WAIT AND SEE.

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 05:17 PM

Good move for SF Jaya wewa

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 05:01 PM

If no permission is required for SF to come to the parliament, why are you making such a fuss?

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 04:41 PM

regardless of what Military Spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe has to say..what is important is what general Anura kumara says........if general Anura kumara says SF does not need permission..so will it be.....

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 04:15 PM

Of course General Sarath Fonseka does not need any permission to come to Parliament as he was elected by the people. Gotabaya is the Defence Ministry . So what else.

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 04:12 PM

when he get bailout i think he can participate opening ceremony of the parliament otherwise.....

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 03:58 PM

Isn't the Parliament supreme according to our Constitution. In which case why are these doubts, suggestions being entertained and wasting newspaper space

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 01:05 PM

Why dont they call for a court ruling on this instead of making counter-statements ?

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 12:35 PM

I agree 100% on this. Military cannot over rule people's democratic election of their MPs. If this happens it will be a further confirmation of dictatorship.

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 12:04 PM

    Brigadier Prasad

If you don't know please do not comment.

I can understand you are talking to the fools majority in SL like a typical politician, but try to understand there are people who have brains

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 11:58 AM

AKD is correct, it is the law of the land. Member of Parliament should be allowed to attend sittings.

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 11:54 AM

Fine, But how is the JVP going to take him out? Further if he is found guilty on the next court session, then?

    Sunday, 18 April 2010 11:47 AM

Mr Anura Kumara...You don't know the Defence Secretary !.
