The Meteorological Department says the tremor felt in parts of Sri Lanka early this morning has not caused any damage or casualties. Disaster Management Center spokesman, Priyantha Kodippily meanwhile said they had not issued an evacuation and people along the coastal belt had moved out on their own following the tsunami alert.

The tremor were felt along most part of the Western and Eastern coast line and even in Central parts of the country  following the 7.5 magnitude earthquakes near the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean early this morning. (GS).

The tremor was felt at Nivasipura housing complex off, JaEla at 1.06am. Woke up when we felt the bed shaking slightly - it must have lasted for atleast 30secs though I like to think it was a minute or more!!! When it stopped for no reason we thought it could be a tremor and checked the time!!! Eerie it was!

Each time the government speaks of CELEBRATING Victory day - some unnatural disaster occurs - maybe the wrath of the gods are upon the country for shamelessly celebrating the loss of so many lives and permanently maimed so many - including our valiant services personnel

I also experienced it. It was scary. I hope this is a one off occurrence. If my house were to break down due to an earthquake, I don't know where I will take my family.

Also judging by how it was for Haiti, I dread to think of a huge earthquake for Sri Lanka

At Moratuwa the very poor who are in the coast was truly excited. However unfortunately none of the TV stations were on. I think high time at least National TV station starts transmission in that kind of an emergency and keep the masses informed. How can many afford satalite TV and BBC

Nature struck at the wrong point. Each time government speaks about CELEBRATING victory day, once Lila hit India, Now Earth quack hit Nicobar islands. What a powerful government this is ??
