The court in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India today ruled that the site of a demolished mosque in Ayodhya, would be divided between Hindus and Muslims, the Reuters news agency reported.

The court also ruled that Hindu idols could stay on the disputed land, lawyers added. The demolition of the 16th century mosque by Hindu mobs in 1992 triggered some of India's worst riots that killed about 2,000 people. More than 200,000 police fanned out in India on Thursday to guard against any communal violence.

If the ruling soothes tensions, it would be a boost for the ruling Congress party, a left-of-centre group with secular roots, that does not want to upset either voter bloc. Major political parties had called for calm.

The verdict came only days before Sunday's opening of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi with the government wanting to project an image of stability and modernity to the world.

In 1992 the demolition of the mosque by Hindu activists sparked riots that killed more than 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, and propelled India's Hindu nationalists into the political mainstream.

What would have happened if the court verdict was against Hindus and RSS???
Verdict must be on archeological proof not by Religious Belief specially Hindus...

This is not about 2 countries. Pakistan is not a 100% Muslim country! There are Hindus, Christians living! And this land dispute is not religion as well! This is for the Holy Worship Place of a Religion for which the Hindu's disgraced themselves by breaking apart! No one wants to disturb peace in any where of the world! Peace is required but no one has any right discriminate or harm ANY RELIGION in the World!

Under the circumstances, this is the best verdict which both sides must respect. It should bring peace and harmony to a country with such deep rooted religious animosity fanned by selfish politicians for decades.

Hindus owned this place for centuries and then it captuired by others. Now time to give it back to Hindus and they should allow other religious people to visit and pray

at the16th century it may belongs to hindu , in practice during these centuries hindu and other religions accepted the islam, so the current land is may be for these man kinds but now they are muslims so the owner of the land is for muslims because this island was owned by current muslim's parents

so who is the owner, think critically,

I appreciate your comments but I want to ask you a question. I come to your house, attack you violently and claim that my house was here before your house so I have the rights to live in your house. Therefore I forcefully occupy your house. In our fight, god forbid I also kill some of your relatives. We both go to the courts and court give the verdict that we both can stay along the site in your house. What would you do?, whats your reaction would be? will you accept the verdict?
