The possibility of a change in leadership has arisen in the United National Party (UNP) with the party expected to make some key changes during the course of this week.

UNP Galle District MP Gayantha Karunatilleke told journalists today that the UNP would undergo major changes this week and the changes would be finalized at the party’s next working committee meeting which is to be held in the next few days. (YP)

Can you tell me one intellectual in the working committee. None of the them are. Are you talking about a party in another country ? Ranil has destroyed the UNP and even for Sajit it will take a decade to build it. But if we have Sajit now with Rukman on the side we will at least be on the way to get back the Sinhala Buddhist votes. Now Ranil is the cause of loosing the Tamil MPs as well.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:57 AM

please do it first ...give it to sajith he can do it well

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:55 AM

We have short memories, Have you all forgotten how young Sajith was behaving when his father was the President !!!
Did he show any leadership qualities then ?

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:51 AM

Yes labby you are correct, that is why all the UNP crossovers are given MInistrial position. and they the ones who speaks and argue in the public and parliament.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:46 AM

How about Ravi Karunanayake? He will make a great leader for the UNP. And then they can make make Mangala Samaraweera the deputy leader. Ranil Wickremasinghe can remain in an advisory capacity. Don't you think these three Royalists can lead our country? They are great Sinhala orators - have you heard them talk in Sinhala? I loved Ravi's speach about Kilinochi and Pamankada.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:45 AM

Ranil time to go..... opposition leadership is not an eternal job man.....

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:44 AM

Yes Mahinda the best is to get Ranil to UPFA and make him
Foreign minister. Country can have GSP+ and UNP can rebuild with new leader.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:41 AM

Only one man can lead UNP to victory - Sajith P.
Ranil should remain as senior member due to his experience

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:41 AM

Ranil should be like Sonia with no executive power. Just a mentor only. Sajit and Rukman with others like Dayasiri can take the party towardsits goals.

Now let's appoint Sajit as Opposition leader and General as Chief opposition whip.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 09:19 AM

Here we go again until the next election.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:30 AM

why not Rosy as the new leader. with Paba as deputy leader. A new feminine look to the elephant. the color can be changed to pink.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:22 AM

U.N.P. changes should come from the grass root level
leader to set an example and hand over & relieve all his
    responsibilities for he younger generation
over 2.5 Million ardent UNP voters did not vote as they are adament that Ranil should go even if Ranil goes for another election in another one month he wont get even 1.5 Million votes from the whole Island
If he realy loves the party HE SHOULD GO

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:21 AM

Ranil will be an excellent advisor to UNP and he can garner external support to take Sr Lanka to greater heights. He should realize this fact and honorably pave the way to Sajith just like the great gentleman Dudley Senanayake who stepped down to let JR to take over.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:18 AM

The order of the day is not to remove Ranil.... Ranil is a good leader with a poor team around him.... what is required is to change the deputy and get two deputies in the likes of Sajith Premadasa and Ravi Karunanayake. These workers will surely get UNP back on its track. E.g : Ranatunga wouldn't have ever won the world cup without Jayasuriya and Aravinda in his 1996 team. So, it's not the leader it's the team members..... Ranil u have to stay !!!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:13 AM

Hope this time around the actual happens not re-structuring of the party. The party needs a fresh outlook starting from the top. Also the new leader and the team will have time to take forward the plans of the party before the next elections which is due in 6 years time.Good luck UNP.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:12 AM

Yes, he shud B there as an adviser not a leader

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:09 AM

Hopeful title. But the story ends the same way :(

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:09 AM

Take a lesson taught by Late Hon. Dudley Senanayake. Decline from either Party Leadership or Leader Of the Opposition position and give that to a younger MP who would be able to take country to next generation But never relie on jumping fish like SB

    Monday, 26 April 2010 02:35 PM

Usual big talks after an election. Changes may happen. But Ranil will remain as the leader till 2016.

    Tuesday, 27 April 2010 06:29 AM

As long as Ranil is the leader,UNP will not come to power again. The key changes should be leader Sajith Premadasa,General Secretary Imitiaz Bakir,Propaganda Secretay Dayasiri. This is the best way to move forward.

    Tuesday, 27 April 2010 06:23 AM

This is a usual phenomenon in the UNP. After every election they agitate. Is Ranil the only man who fights the elections? What about all other stalwarts in the Party?

    Tuesday, 27 April 2010 06:11 AM

Rosy/ Paba Better than Ranil as the leader for certain.

Rosy one day will blossom in to a great leader.... do not make fun.... Paba is a gracious , straight forward, lady....

    Tuesday, 27 April 2010 06:04 AM

First let's change the UNP constitution, where it says the leader will be for life. Let's make it 4 or so years, unless the UNP is in power, then the President of the country will be the leader.

Elections to be held as per US method based on districts and no of electorates. Prior registration as UNP members should be necessary for voting.

    Tuesday, 27 April 2010 04:00 AM

If the cricket team loses a match - can you blame the captain only? The matter cannot be resolved by the removal of the captain. The outcome is the collective effort of the whole team. If UNP loses - everyone blames Ranil. But if the UNP won - everyone will try to take the credit. SO THE ENTIRE UNP GROUP SHOULD TAKE THE BLAME.

    Tuesday, 27 April 2010 02:44 AM

Get rid of Malik and Ravi and 50% of the problems will be over

    Monday, 26 April 2010 05:42 PM

Any reforms should lead to a change in ledership. Anything else will be meaningless. Also the leader's ability to appoint the 'working committee' should be done-away with. I have a feeling that Ranil will be playing for time, with more gimmicks. This shold not be allowed at all. There has to be a democratic way of electing the leader.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 02:41 PM

Can understand Sajith and Dayasiri. How does Rukman come into the picture. He cant say boo to a goose!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:08 AM

Sajith is the best “young visionary go getter”. However I have a serious doubt a person like Ranil will ever step down may. be this is the Joke of the day , lets see

    Monday, 26 April 2010 02:28 PM

Sajith is the better choice,He is the one in the mind of poor people same as premadasa did.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 12:18 PM

We need Sajith at the moment. Ranil is the best leader for our country. But unfortunately he can't come to power.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 10:41 AM

There is no charismatic leader to take it to the pre 1977 era. Ranil is mature, astute & very learned. Just as JR groomed Gamini D & Lalith A - Ranil should groom Sajith, Dayasiri, Ravi.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 10:36 AM

I have seen enough of this guy RW. If only he steps down I may again cast my vote for the elephant.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 10:30 AM

No matter what they do now, the UNP is beyond salvage, The root cause being Ranil. The attempt to associate Sarath Fonseka, playing second fiddle to some minority parties, invitation to SLFP(M) wing to join etc shows how utterly desperate the UNP is. It is a shame as there are some capable MPs, some even may crossover.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 09:51 AM

UNP will win the next election under PREMADASA leadership...

    Monday, 26 April 2010 09:47 AM

Ranil should be advisor and the Opposition Leaders post given to Eran Wickramaratne. He was the CEO of the NDB Bank and under his leadership the bank became one of the leading banks in Sri Lanka with the best annual turnovers. He too has excellent leadership qualities and he is a visionary and a team person. Liked by many.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 09:28 AM

    ape ranil apita one!!!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:26 AM

It could have been very wise discretion, if it could have been executed just before the election. It however is not too late. We need well structured strong opposition team to resist Mr & Co Family eternally. God Bless Sri Lanka …

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:38 AM

Pls change policies.... If its the same policies UNP will be worse then this....be patrotic opposition...

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:38 AM

    Are you joking ???

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:38 AM

go home Ranil..You betrayed UNP and the opposition at the parliament.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:36 AM

Pls give the leadership to Sajith Premadasa..... He has that leadership qualities..

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:34 AM

Go for a national government! Some people may say "Ah!". But its possible! Good for the country.Thats the best change all parties could offer the Lankans!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:30 AM

Key in Ranil, Please change him

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:29 AM

What the UNP needs now is a leader who can take the party to 1977 era.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:28 AM

If you cant govern Get out.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:39 AM

    intellectuals???? such as.....? :)

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:25 AM

Yes, the start of an era which kills, robs and gives money to the LTTE? Keep in mind that it was Ranil who humanized the once feared demon-like party.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:25 AM

    Better late than never.
Or else, UNP will head nowhere in Sri lanka politics.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:23 AM

In terms of intellectuals the UNP is still the strongest political party. Sanity and prudence will prevail.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:21 AM

    ranil go home...

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:21 AM

Better late than never. Pull up your socks , Ranil step down

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:21 AM

    THIS IS A GOOD MOVE.

THIS IS GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY.

THIS WILL ENABLE THE COUNTRY TO HAVE A FORMIDABLE OPPOSITION AS THE CURRENT LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION'S USE BY DATE IS UP!

HOPE THE ELECTED LEADER WILL BE A BETTER ONE.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:18 AM

    IT IS ABOUT TIME
LET US HAVE A MAN OF THE TIME AS LEADER
GO ON SAJITH .. GOOD LUCK

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:18 AM

    Usual response after a defeat.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:50 AM

Exactly. It's high time. The opposition needs a new face...both superficially and at a deeper vision/policy level.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:06 AM

Yes Ranil should go, he doesnt have any leadership quality,
if President Rajapakse can get Ranil to his side and offer Foreign Minister Job country will prosper also UNP will prosper!!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:03 AM

What we need today is a pragmatic political system where the leader has to have a personal touch with the voters like you have to be one of them, share their thoughts and feelings at least superficially and this is the way that you can attain political success. As it is the best choice would be Sajith and if the UNP wants to regain its loss and survive this should be done without further delay. Ranil is intelligent no doubt, but unfortunately he cannot take the party forward. He has proved this 19 times.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:03 AM

    exactly

    Monday, 26 April 2010 08:02 AM

    FINALLY!!!!

AND AT LEAST HOPE THAT THEY ACTUALLY CHANGE IT....

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:58 AM

    Medicine after death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:57 AM

Long time anticipated....UNP need a change from grass root...UNP need young energetic & aggresive leadership ....good luck UNP....

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:54 AM

sajith is the man we want - the others are out of date and cannot get the voters enthusiastic anymore

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:50 AM

    Duppathage Hithawatha... We need Sajith!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:13 AM

All the best for United National Party, let's start another Premadasa era. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:49 AM

There should be a Strong leader with a STRONG BACK BONE.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:48 AM

BRING IN SAJITH. I AM SURE HE WILL BE A GOOD LEADER. WE NEED DYNAMIC INDIVIDUALS.

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:45 AM

Let us have something new! how many times has Ranil lost? I lost count, GOP has to come back to life and Ranil is not the answer!!!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:41 AM

it's going to be cosmetic. just to shelve discontent for a while. the unp has a draconian constitution and ranil is no democrat, not in spirit, action or conviction....

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:40 AM

    AS USUAL !!!!!!

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:40 AM

I wish you all the best.We need you to ressurect the GOP.you are the best

    Monday, 26 April 2010 07:40 AM

I think Ranil should remain in an advisory capacity as he has more experience and Sajith should be groomed to take leadership
