Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Monday condemned the Sri Lankan government for scrapping the Tamil version of its national anthem.

"If the reports in this regard are true, it is strongly condemnable. This will further dishearten Tamils (in Sri Lanka), who are already suffering. I condemn it," he said in a statement released in India.

Sri Lanka had scrapped the Tamil version of its national anthem at official and state functions after the cabinet decided at its last meeting, that the national anthem can only be rendered in the Sinhala language at official functions. (PTI)

    John Monday, 13 December 2010 10:26 AM

Yes. Canada has national anthem in two languages, Switzerland has in four languages and south africa has in five languages, because of multi ethnic situation. Even Indian national anthem is not in Hindi, it is in Bengali which is another minority language in India and the national anthem was written by Ravindranath Thakoor, from west bengal. India did not change its national anthem in Hindi because it was the majority language.

Barack Obama Monday, 13 December 2010 10:28 AM

Do the 62 million inTamilnadu get to sing the Indian National anthem in Tamil? In USA, the so called free world, 15.8% of the population is Hispanic (Spanish). Do the Spanish speaking people in USA get to sing the US national anthem in Spanish. Is Spanish the Second language in US because 15.8% is Hispanic. Karunanidhi dude & the jokers, mind your own bisiness

Why we cannot accept these two language national anthem. There are any countries that they have their national anthem in may languages.

Why suddenly GVT want to change? We are talking of one country of different nationals. Tamils are Srilankans and they should be able to sing it in their language.

We are going back where it started again.

    suppu Monday, 13 December 2010 11:44 AM

The Indian national anthem in Bengali (a minority language in India) not in Hindi. One of the Sri Lankan ministers didnt know this.. so shame. there are many truly democratic nations such as Canada,Swiss, South Africa have multi language anthem.
Can Sri Lanka have Tamil only anthem like India has one in Bengali..???! If no.. then think yourself why not..??!

    Fayad Monday, 13 December 2010 11:48 AM

why Indian national anthem is not having a Tamil version ????

    Arasi Monday, 13 December 2010 11:55 AM

    RainGod Monday, 13 December 2010 11:59 AM

TAMIL VERSION WAS IN PRACTICE FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES. SUDDEN STOPPAGE CAN GIVE RISE TO SUSPICION THAT IT IS RACIALLY MOTIVATED.

    Faqi Monday, 13 December 2010 12:03 PM

    You mean revenge?

    Rohan T Monday, 13 December 2010 12:07 PM

To argue about what other countries do is to miss the point. If we are to think of ourselves as “One Nation”, then we must also recognise that we have different faiths and languages. Tamil and Sinhala have been spoken in our island for many hundreds of years. It is dangerously wrong to deliberately exclude Tamil at a time when we are concentrating on re-building the nation. To force one group of people to sing the national anthem in a language that they do not understand is wrong. It sends a very potent signal to all minorities that their turn is next.

    Commonsense Monday, 13 December 2010 12:08 PM

In Indian main parliment thay are not accept tamil language for communicate. So no point of view argue about national anthems.

    Faqi Monday, 13 December 2010 12:10 PM

Two language mean not two anthems

Rohan T, you said a very good point for everybody

    Alien Monday, 13 December 2010 03:31 PM

There shouldn't be 2 different versions of anthem. But I think the Sinhala anthem should have some lines in Tamil so Sinhala people also will sing. vise versa.

    Nimal Monday, 13 December 2010 03:57 PM

Why don't you go and make Elam in Tamil Nadu? You have a bigger land and more Tamil population there. We can ship whoever in favor for that Elam from Sri Lanka.

    Kavitha Monday, 13 December 2010 04:03 PM

Thanks Rohan.. at least we have some sinhala people who understand our feelings.. soon u will be branded as traitor..

    sanga Monday, 13 December 2010 04:09 PM

I thing SL govt wants tamil people to have their anthem in their own language. Once Colvin R>D.Silva said one language two nations. Two language one nation.

    Kavitha Monday, 13 December 2010 04:12 PM

Don't even worry about that.. they will do it perfectly..

    steve Monday, 13 December 2010 04:20 PM

They never learn from the history!

I suppose this is the "path to reconciliation" for this Govt. Can the Sinhalese brothers sing the National Anthem in Tamil?

    Hareesz Monday, 13 December 2010 06:27 PM

This guy wants some publicity now. Better not interfere in SL affairs

Sensible Historian Monday, 13 December 2010 08:02 PM

    Ajith Monday, 13 December 2010 11:35 PM

If u like to adopt US style for National anthem, then can you accept federal system as US in SL? and would you US follow everything as US ask u.

    Maadi Tuesday, 14 December 2010 12:23 AM

Was the SL national anthom originally done both in Sinhala and Tamil?
What is the reason behind this dicision? It better be a good one.
I hope this will not create a problem once again.

    citizen1 Tuesday, 14 December 2010 01:37 AM

We could've included one verse in Tamil after a surviving a 26yr war! Why is this govt so supremist?

    chenamana Tuesday, 14 December 2010 02:16 AM

Most of the above commentators are Sinhalese and they commented in communal way. I think the tamils don't worry about this National song or what ever they called. Tamils are looking for their national Anthem not the Sinhalese national anthem. Definitely they will sing their own Tamil Eelam National Anthem very soon.

    lance Tuesday, 14 December 2010 02:30 AM

Only south indian politicians can make such comments like this and still get away. In india the national anthem is only in one language. Mr.U can't make any comments on this.

knight Rider Tuesday, 14 December 2010 03:31 AM

You are right SINHALAYA, Why are these Indian politician so interested interfering with our country. dont they know that each country has a national language and the National Anthem was sung in that language. The Tamil version was written in Tamil to make it convenient for the Tamils. something which T-NADU does not even have !!!!

    Sin-Tam Mix Tuesday, 14 December 2010 03:41 AM

So that All SriLankans can sing their National Anthem as ONE!!

    Sin-Tam Mix Tuesday, 14 December 2010 03:49 AM

    Bish Tuesday, 14 December 2010 07:01 AM

    Mr. Karunaanithi,
Can you sing India's Antham in Tamil???

Common Man Tuesday, 14 December 2010 08:53 AM

There is no Sinaha Nadu in any part of the world, so, this is it. Ceylon or Sinha Land.

    mervyn Tuesday, 14 December 2010 09:31 AM

He should make a tamil version of the Indian national anthem first , before commenting.

poor but rich Tuesday, 14 December 2010 10:08 AM

many have forgotten the HISTORY so fast. so sad.......

    karunanidhipook Tuesday, 14 December 2010 10:10 AM

We want a Sinhala version each of the Eelam anthem and the Indian anthem first.

    luwie Tuesday, 14 December 2010 01:36 PM

How can you equate an ethnic identity (SInahala) to a national identity? aren't we trying to be Sri lankan so why can't you be a Sinhalese and also be a Sri lankan whilst also being a Tamil and a Sri lankan.? If we don't have a national Anthem in both "official" languages then we are telling Tamils that to be Sri lankan= being Sinhalese.

    A VOTER Tuesday, 14 December 2010 02:58 PM

    I agree with you.

    A VOTER Tuesday, 14 December 2010 03:06 PM

Most probably he is oppose in principle and support in practice. LOL

    A VOTER Tuesday, 14 December 2010 03:07 PM

This is a good idea. I prefer to have equal amount of words for both languages. I believe some countries practice that.

    Freelanced Wednesday, 15 December 2010 05:34 AM

To scrap something, it should be existing. Where do we see a tamil version of the national anthem in the constitution ?
