The Human Rights Commission (HRC) is to visit General Sarath Fonseka next week to see if recommendations given by the commission on his detention facilities have been implemented, HRC sources told Daily Mirror online.

The HRC which had visited General Fonseka recently submitted a report to the relevant authorities by the HRC Commissioner and certain recommendations have been mentioned to improve the facilities offered to the General.

“A team of officers from the inquiries and investigations department of the HRC visited the General last week to see for ourselves whether his living conditions are satisfactory. We were satisfied but have submitted certain recommendations,” the HRC source said.

The HRC is also expected to visit Fonseka next week to see if the recommendations have been implemented and the HRC will continue to be in contact with the relevant authorities, the source said.

“We are acting within our mandate. General Fonseka is a civilian so it is our duty to check if he is treated normally with the basic facilities provided to him,” the source said.

Amongst some of the recommendations mentioned are to improve the ventilation and medical facilities offered to the General.

President Mahinda Rajapakse had late last month in an interview with the Hindu said that General Fonseka was getting luxury treatment in custody and had been given a luxury flat, the Navy Commander’s Chalet. The President had also said that if Fonseka had won the Presidential Election then he would have been in Bogambara Prison in a 2x2 cell.

Interesting point is about Navy Commander’s Chalet. If the Navy Commander is not using that chalet, what is the point of maintaining such luxurious facilities? or has it been used to detain so called "missing people".

Why only Sarath Fonseka. Is it because he has given a 5 star prison accommodation?HRC should visit all the prisons in the Island to see whether prisoners are treated properly. No one is above the law and there should be no discrimination against SF and other prisoners in the island.

He .. he .. he .. he .. he .. Wow! The Human Rights Commission Of Sri Lanka! ... You have a mandate? Name your Commissioners? ... Ha .. ha .. ha .. ha! What's that ... ? Dancing to the tune of the 'powerful'? That's why you were demoted from 'A' status to 'B,' by the ICC for National HRCs right? One year back the President had his 'puppets' as the Commissioners and they brought-down the dignity of the Commission, to its 'knees' ...

The HRC has never done anything for the innocent people of this country. Why?

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 01:58 PM

What Human Rights? People in Sri Lanka go missing when they oppose the MR govt. SF has been held captive without any charges.

    All eyewash!

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 12:37 PM

Hold on! Who are the members of the HR Commission? Please disclose their names. I thought their term lapsed and a new Commission has not been appointed.

Is it the Secretary to the HR Commission and some assistants who are pretending to be the HR Commission?

Let intelligence to do the duty.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 12:01 PM

    Dear HRC
will u be bought over as well??

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:52 AM

Hope HRC is not forced to be bias towards the Govt?

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:44 AM

At a glance it seems that MR was messed up by GR totally. After 22 days no charges, Have not they thought about the charges before they took him into custody? Is the AG sleeping? or is he in a difficulty in cooking up charges? LOL

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:43 AM

If SF was 'declared the winner', it would not have taken 72 hours to frame charges against most in the cabinet , MR, Gota Basil etc.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:30 AM

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONED ALLOWED TO VISIT SF. BUT WERE THEY ALLOWED TO VISIT THOSE WHO HAD BEEN ABDUCTED LIKE JOURNALIST/MEDIA PEROSONELS(I THINK GOSL DOSENT KNOW THEIR ADDRESS)

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:37 AM

Wow... great news. Human Rights being implemented in our country :)) this is really a breaking news in this juncture

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:20 AM

I strongly recommend HRC to visit where KP is held and give a report to the public on luxuries he enjoys. After that people will fitght to go to jail to enjoy the luxuries enjoyed by KP

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:20 AM

If one does not want to go to Bogambara prison, one should dispatch the General where he cannot come back, guilty or not. Right? Logic!! This is where the General will end , Justice or no Justice!!

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:09 AM

This is a wonderful report. They say they were satisfied with the conditions of living but they also say that the ventilation and some other facilities, including medical facilities have to be improved. Don't they know that the VENTILATION AND MEDICAL FACILITIES ARE BASIC FACILITIES PARAMOUNT TO ANYBODY? Are they under the influence of any drugs when they say they are "satisfied" but some ..... Please be honest with what you say and do! You are not only fooling others but you are FOOLING YOURSELVES!!!

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:09 AM

I agree with the President's statement in the interview with Hindu. Whatever it is our president is sympathetic, passionate, and kind hearted. General cannot even come close to MR where the above qualities are concerned. I do not think anyone can deny this.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 11:05 AM

According to the president, Fonseka is accommodated in a "luxury flat" but the Human Rights Commission wants to improve the ventilation facilities. Ever heard of a "luxury" flat with poor ventilation?. According to some reports, Fonseka is housed in a single room without windows. One wonders how the terrorist leader KP is housed. If some reports are to be believed he is the one who is being accommodated in a luxury flat with even his girl friends being given access. So it is George Bush's theory being practised to the letter: "You are either with us or with them"

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:54 AM

I read what MR has told to Hindu.
He himself explains that he had no reasons to send General to Bogambara (that's why given a luxuary apartment) and is aware that he would have been in Bogambara if Gereral won.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:51 AM

Anoma also can stay with him!

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:50 AM

What about the HR of other suspects in remand prisons waiting for trials?? Dont they deserve better living conditions too since they are civilians as well. They dont of course expect the same facilities as given to SF but at least basics that a human being needs rather than stcoked in rooms 300% over the capacity. HRC may be too busy with rich and famous to look into their needs. like they say money talks and bulshit walks.

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:45 AM

Wy should you submit recommendations if you are satisfied? Were you directed to do so???

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:45 AM

Where is KP held? What charges leveled against him? Money talk

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:42 AM

NOW, WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE MINISTRY OF SO CALLED HUMAN RIGHTS????????//

    Thursday, 04 March 2010 10:42 AM

    Yes, it is really surprising
