Members of the Jaffna Sinhala families evicted by the LTTE today said although they are in possession of their land deeds the government is not making any moves to resettle them as their lands are now in possession of Mahavir families.

Displaying their land deeds at a media briefing the displaced Sinhalese who are now housed at Jaffna Railway station said they are now being looked after by their former Tamil neighbours and relations as their property had been given to ‘Mahavir’ families by the LTTE in their absence.

Close to 100 Jaffna Sinhala families that were given temporary shelter in Mihintale after their eviction have now moved to Jaffna in view of resetting.

pro LTTE Media carries the false propaganda that SL govt is sinhalising Jaffna,Tamils' home land as they claim citing that names of towns and villages are renamed with sinhala names and many sign boards appear in Sinhala and lot of sinhala families(mainly those of army) are being settled in Tamils' land. Why can't tamils tolerate settlement of sinhalese families there If Sinhalese can tolerate tamils and their activities in areas dominant of sinhalese. It should be a mix of all 3 ethnics in all parts of SL to test tolerance.

matara kolla Thursday, 04 November 2010 12:06 PM

They too are a priority as they were homeless even before most tamils. They were brave enough to suffer discrimination yet carry on their busineeses in the North until evicted during LTTE reign.

Dear Professor you are naive or one heck of an optimist

    Saradial Thursday, 04 November 2010 12:53 PM

FYI: Minister of Resettlement : Milroy Fernando
Deputy Minister of Resettlement : V.Muralitharan Alis Karuna

Rishad nothing to do with this issue.

    Fair n Square Thursday, 04 November 2010 12:53 PM

what u say is fair and u say u r not a sinhalese but why hide in a sinhalese name?

    Saradial Thursday, 04 November 2010 12:55 PM

Maha virar family? what the hell this is evict them and give the lands to land owners.

Mohamed Shafraz Thursday, 04 November 2010 01:00 PM

As some said even if this is JHU's political move , if they are the owners of the land evict the Ex LTTE families and resettle land owners.

    Fair n Square Thursday, 04 November 2010 01:01 PM

People who have deeds Prior to the anarchy and who were ethnically cleansed or driven away should be given back their properties. Whether it be Sinhala,Tamil, Muslim, Malay Borah, Memon Burgher, they owned the land and are the rightful owners. Not the people to whom the properties were unfairly given by the LTTE whether Mahaviar families or otherwise.

Mohamed Shafraz Thursday, 04 November 2010 01:06 PM

You can't justify one felony by another.

    Saradial Thursday, 04 November 2010 01:10 PM

No body can stop resettling real owners of the land. evict LTTE families and resettle real owners of the land.

    ram Thursday, 04 November 2010 01:51 PM

tamils are buying in colombo, sinhalese wanted to get resettled with governement money. it is altogether different think in principal, dont write like a bigoted idiot

    Roshan Thursday, 04 November 2010 11:41 AM

friend, buying propaties and resettled by the gov. is 2 diffrent thing..

ampara son Thursday, 04 November 2010 04:22 PM

any one can live any place this country. racisum over. if they wish live jaffna give to them land.

    Baskar Thursday, 04 November 2010 04:55 PM

The people who are housed at Jaffna railway station only stayed at rented accomdation before the war. they did not have any land in Jaffna. So it proves this corruped goverment gave them false documents. The people in SL should be able to live anywhere in SL as long as if they can buy the land or rent a home

    Baskar Thursday, 04 November 2010 04:58 PM

    Mushi,
The people in SL should be able to live anywhere in SL as long as if they can buy the land in jaffna like Tamils or Muslims do in other areas.
Not like goverment sponsered settlement by taking tamils land

    lankanman Thursday, 04 November 2010 05:58 PM

You are correct Shfraz. Muslim`s evictions from Slave Island also a correct thing the govrnment did. It was justified by the government that they did not suppose to be there.

    sangaralingham Thursday, 04 November 2010 06:25 PM

all lands properties should be given to rightful owners whoever theyme. if not proper compensation from cuurrent occupiers.

    sangaralingham Thursday, 04 November 2010 06:27 PM

rediculous good human being with morality should not have done that. fear apprehension all the responsible activity left many in the dark untrustful etc sign of failed government

    Saradial Friday, 05 November 2010 05:04 AM

Lands should be given if only they are the rightful owners, cannot accept planed settlements

Mohamed Shafraz Friday, 05 November 2010 05:37 AM

    Totally agree!

    Anura Friday, 05 November 2010 12:11 PM

JHU is the only party tht they could find to talk about this to.. but if they get sm advantages from it eventually.

    ajith Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:36 AM

All Mahavir's are now destroyed and perished.
It is the duty of the rulers to either compensate or hand over original lands or either alternate land to the victims.

Unarmed Gunman Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:08 AM

Everything is political in Sri Lanka. I can see this event as a political move only. Just to develop enmity between Sinhalese and Tamils and inspiring people unnecessary and get more votes.

    suwantha Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:09 AM

vote again mahinda rajapaksa government then you can fulfil your everything.idiots go to hell.

    sampath Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:10 AM

why are these people seeking the support of the JHU? or is it the JHU that is exploiting them for their political agenda? we must get rid of all extremist parties and agendas if sri lanka is to prosper

buriyani baba Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:11 AM

    ela ela....

    wasala Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:14 AM

no this is a true story. All the papers had it in the front page.
Some of these people have intermarried and have mix blood.
One is not asking govt to evict mahavir families although they supported the LTTE, but let these Sinhala people who were languishing in camps for decades too resettle somehwere in Jaffna.
Don't they have a right to their land, why are they being discriminated because they are Sinhalese?

    mihin Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:16 AM

party or no party, they have a genuine grievance and somebody should attend to that. they have suffered enough.

    Ravy Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:20 AM

If these deeds are legal, then these Sinhala families need to be relocated to their former lands. The coming years are going to be a test of how tolerant we all are towards each other. Sri-Lanka is a land for all it's people, Jaffna no exception!

    sampath Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:21 AM

maybe mihin funds can be allocated for the purpose :)

Unarmed Gunman Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:25 AM

And if their agreement is legit why they are going with JHU a party which is only known for its extremism. Don't support them just because they are speaking your own language or following your religion. If these people have legitimate documents next day they can acquire their house with police. JHU is not fighting for the freedom or justice, they only promote religious and racial extremism. At least, we must understand the real nature of this event it after seeing their strong presence on this matter.

    Hash Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:30 AM

but they say everything is settled... Why do they go for new project when people are not settled still.. What kind of a development is that ?

    vikum Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:07 AM

Very true, if the government can resettle tamils and muslims why not resettle. Rishard and Milroy don't care about sinhalese.
At least give land somewhere else in Jaffna.

    migara Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:42 AM

Unarmed gunman, heard both minister of rehabilitation milroy and douglas devananda are not helping them.
Obviously they have to have a hold, so they have gone back to roots, JHU.

    nihal Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:45 AM

Any Tamil or Muslim person can buy a house anywhere in the counry and live. But sinhal person is denied. Is it fair? not a discrimination? Pl answer to this by a Tamil leader who oppose the settlement( I am not a sinhalees but we should be reasonable in demands)

    purohitha Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:47 AM

Sinhalese must be given equal status in resettlemnt. Hon President, should not ignore the needs of Sinhala people just because they have shown their support foe and approval for him. This is a complex we all have had in the past, lot of Sinhala legislative, executive, administrative officers and leaders always wanted to be more white than the white rulers. Lets hope the this administartion is different.

    Azar Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:51 AM

If tamils and muslims are being resettled then Sinhalese too should resettle. there's room for all of us in Jaffna.

Prof. Ravi Kulatunga Thursday, 04 November 2010 09:54 AM

@suwantha, your comments are confusing. Neverthless, I'm glad you think the Rajapaksa government can solve these problems. Let the government do their job and in 2 years all these problems will be solved

gamunu Wijesinghe Thursday, 04 November 2010 10:28 AM

You are a worst idiot to post such comments. Why won't you be the first to exit to hell.

Sri Lankan Thursday, 04 November 2010 10:30 AM

You mean the guys who are awaiting for the land will disapear. Just like most of the LTTE guys who surrendered to the ARMY at the last stage.

    Lalith Thursday, 04 November 2010 10:33 AM

This resettlement issue has to be addressed properly. Some Tamils and Tamilnet often protest about Sinhalese settling in North and East but are quite happy to have Tamils buying property in Colombo and elsewhere. A significant Sinhala presence is needed in North and East to balance Tamil presence in other parts of the island.

    rif Thursday, 04 November 2010 10:35 AM

what happen Tamil shops and land Kribathgoda and Kadawath?
do the come there and get the land?
