Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader and Nawalapitiya candidate Rauff Hakeem told Daily Mirror online that he had complained to the police of thugs roaming outside some polling booths in Nawalapitiya this morning.

Mr. Hakeem, who was rushing to the area a short while ago, said that he had spoken to the police Deputy Inspector General (IGP) of the area regarding the thugs noting that their mere presence is intimidating to the voters.

Hakeem however said that following his complaint to the police he had heard that the thugs had withdrawn from the vicinity of the Nawalapitiya polling booths.

Mr Hakeem, don't you know this is a democratic country therefore thugs can contest for the elections.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 06:26 AM

No one talks about the wastage of public funds, for re polling due to the actions of some politicians.I would suggest that the culprits be identified and made to pay.
How can the President make this country the Asian wonder with these types of politicians.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 06:58 AM

All political leaders make innocent people fools, They take votes and disappear, What a funny joke repeating decades and decades.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 07:10 AM

Although thugs, since they are voters from that area they have the right to cast their votes today. Might be they are waiting till they get their chance

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 09:24 AM

    Exactly! And they'll enter Parliament.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 09:44 AM

The purpose is not met, it seems the Election Commission should find some ways and means to satisfy all the political parties or at least the main political parties from the Opposition and it won't be possible due to the large number that also ran as independents and proxies of political parties.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 10:33 AM

Election thuggery could have been nipped in the bud if the President had taken appropriate action when he got jeered at Dr Amunugama's election meeting.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 12:14 PM

THIS FELLOW IS DREAMING THUGS.......NO OTHER WORDS....

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 01:25 PM

    thugs??

why not just say govt supporters?? its all the same right...

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 04:54 AM

thugs are part and parcel of the election system in sri lanka.
live with them, cos police dont care.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 04:52 AM

Even the President who has already got a majority, cannot control the thugs within his own government, nor even the Police. It will be interesting to see whether this thug whom even other govt ministers claim was violent, will be nominated as a Minister.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 04:45 AM

Thugs are all in the parliament.

    Tuesday, 20 April 2010 04:41 AM

Thugs ! are they MPs or contestants.Only thugs are qualified to be MPs.They are the best to rule the country.Kelaniya is a example of the good work of a elected MP.He has closed bars. We dont need to enact laws if all MPs act like our Dutugemunu

Hakeen is trying to be a "King Maker" - knows that UNF is losing.....only hope is "pole vault" to Govt...become a Cabinet Minister....better than 6 years in opposition....
