The police have begun tracking down vehicles that have any kind of tinted glass in the front windows. A spokesman for the City Traffic Police said that regulations were sent by the Defence Ministry informing vehicle owners and drivers that only clear glass should appear in the front windows of all vehicles.

Any kind of tinted glass in the rear side of the vehicle is allowed. The traffic police have commenced tracking down such vehicles and informing vehicle owners.

More than 100% agree with you

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 07:21 PM

SRI LANKA. FULL OF LAWS BUT A LAWLESS GOUNTRY.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 09:23 PM

Why don't Sri Lankan government do some thing about the reckless driving, which cause so many deaths. This is more important than tinted glass.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 01:30 AM

Perhaps this is a safety precaution issue.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 02:15 AM

    Sri Lankan,
these are vehicles without number plates, which are allowed to roam free because they belong to politicians and their stooges. the law to ban tinted glasses too will not apply to them. I have seen in papers how a British minister was fined by the cops for using a mobile while driving. here such things do not happen

    Monday, 10 May 2010 03:07 AM

I think gont should ban tinted glass in all windows. LTTE was not the only viruss SL had. I agree too-bright lights should also be banned. By the way, law of the country needs to be applied for all not only for selected.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 03:10 AM

Then who bears the cost of removing?

    Monday, 10 May 2010 03:37 AM

This is a good move. it should apply to every body equal.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 03:38 AM

This should be challenged in the Supreme Court based on health concerns …..this is related to protect passengers from direct exposure to UV rays , Hope some courageous gentlemen will challenge this stupid law

    Monday, 10 May 2010 04:44 AM

The Police don't know the meaning of 'Front','Side' &'Rear'.It should be front windscreen, side shutters/windows.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 05:09 PM

It should be banned, not only for reason of national security. also for traffic safety, dark front windscreen has very limited visibility.it is deliberate violation of the traffic safety.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 05:51 AM

should they atleast not give some grace period for people to take off the tint? Coz cops will now stop cars every corner to make a quick buck.
Also, how fair is this i ask you, one govt allow tinted, next dont allow tinted...are people expected to take them off and put them on at the govt's fancy???
this country is CRAZY! why cant they agree on one thing for once.
and if it is a rule, it should apply to all...including top govt officials

    Monday, 10 May 2010 06:04 AM

Front tint dosent mean it has to be dark ,there a crystal clear tints with 40% heat rejection and 90% UV rejection for front glasses from 3M,Nanolux , Vcool etc , even for side windows you can only have 5% percent dark but 50% HR , 90 % UVR

    Monday, 10 May 2010 08:33 AM

    Shean
I totally agree with you. Although 3M is relatively expensive, it comes with a 10-year guarantee, and makes the windscreen shatter-proof. I've been using it for 8 months now, and its perfect. No tint!

    Monday, 10 May 2010 08:53 AM

Now LTTE is defeated. Now, not much security threat to anyone in this country. Why defence ministry wants to do this thing. If this rule is appplied to all citizens of Sri lanka including politicians, armed forces , police etc ok. otherwise
it is very unfair for ordinary citizens of this counrty.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 09:01 AM

OK, the rule should be equally applied for VVIPS, VIPS and MPs of Provitional counciles etc.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 09:08 AM

    Well said Amila

    Monday, 10 May 2010 09:46 AM

    Amila - very true.
Law makers are the law breakers.

    Monday, 10 May 2010 09:53 AM

Absolutely idiotic decision!!! Pretty soon, sun glasses and hats will be banned too!!!

    manjula Sunday, 12 June 2011 10:35 AM

this regulation only for van car small vehicale but not apply for benze prado intercooler..ect

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 11:12 AM

Ask the Customs guys or an honest used car importer and they will tell you that such imports can easily be prevented.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 08:32 AM

    Ban Vehicles altoghether

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 08:35 AM

Tinted shutters are not bad than this stupid bright headlights. i dont even knw what to call (tubelight effect)them. when u drive its completely distracting u whn there is a vehicle opposite. Why these authorities dont see unwanted and bad things first.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 08:36 AM

People use this tinted papers to save energy while using A/C.
This warm conditions and high fuel price people can't afford to compromise other options.
With LTTE eradicated, SF in custody, why the authorities still hares people.
    This is ridiculous.
This kind of regulations shall pass through legally.
Defense ministry can not put regulations as they wish.
How about parliamentarians, same applies to them as well.
    This is a funny country.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 09:06 AM

driving with tinted is very hard and cannot recognize the distance of front or rear coming vehicle. Also cannot reverse easy. Its realy danger at night driving.
Also must check all the vehicles head lights at night some crazy drivers make specialy arrange to harress others.they adjust the lights to focus front drivers. Also bus they right side one light to road and one for focus to front car drivers. They do not dimp light and not care for them Please catch them and punish and teach them.
Also ministers of parliment they come from our vote and they fly like birds on the road owners.please stop this hate attitute.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 09:08 AM

yes that's right. govt should ban those bright headlights first.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 09:11 AM

    What about mervin sliva vehicles???

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 09:21 AM

For someone who can spend 10 or 15 million bucks on a luxury car or SUV saving a few bucks on energy saving might not be a real issue. But vehicles with tinted glasses are very often used by political yakos, criminals including drug barons, and egotistic "pakum karayas". The police won't succeed in implementing this regulation.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 09:23 AM

What about original glass come with tint. now most of vehicle come with tint glass (not tint by a sticker).
And most importantly what are these WPC 2009/2010 WPC 2010-2011 nmber plates. Can see lot of vehical baring them (new and old vehicles)? Think they dont have insuarance and in a case of accident how to log a complain and never see such a vehicle stopped by a police.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 11:02 AM

Before doing this must teach the drivers to use the roads properly. What about asking them to stick to the marked road lanes and be in queue properly rather than wiggling through traffic lanes to come to the front. This is mainly for threewheeler drivers and and motor cyclists.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 08:31 AM

This will apply only for some people.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 11:16 AM

    Why so scared...!?!...War is over..."OR"...!?!

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 11:24 AM

    Well said pursa

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 11:29 AM

    Good on ya Ranjan,

You said all what I wanted to say. Keep up the good work.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 11:31 AM

    Well said Smart Alec.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 12:39 PM

    What about VIP cars???

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 12:57 PM

Well why people use tint is mostly to cut the strong sun light and save energy in air conditioning but if it is a security threat we will comply with it but it should apply to all citizens. I hope all will agree.

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 03:00 PM

Sir Lankan - Most modern day cars come with UV protection - (slightly tinted glasses). But no one is allowed to tint the front windows. Its illegal to tint the front windows of vehicles in all countries in the West. This is a safety regulation as the Police should be able to see the driver and the front seat passenger. Any one could tint the back and rear windows but not the front. .

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 03:10 PM

i Hussein - Driving on "high beam" lights when there is on coming traffic is illegal in all countries. In Sri Lanka driver education is poor and the traffic police do not enforce the law about driving with high beams. In all advanced countries all drive on" low beam" in built up areas, only in the countryside they use the" high beam" when driving at night. The law is very clear on this. One has to 'dip' the lights to low beam when there is on coming traffic 200 yards ahead and also dip the lights to low beam when following behind another vehicle at night . Usually in modern cars there is a blue warning light on the dash if one is on "high beam"

    Sunday, 09 May 2010 04:03 PM

Ban all the vehicles which does not have proper functioning TAIL LIGHT, this will save valuable lifes from Accidents......
