The father of seven year old Sudil Nilupul Silva who was killed in a shootout between the police and a gang of thieves in Beruwala yesterday, blamed the police today saying they should not have opened fire in a public area.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online just hours before his son was laid to rest, Sudil Nilupul Silva’s father said that he made every effort to take his son to safety when he heard gunshots in the area but minutes later realized that his son was shot.

He said that while he respects the law the police should have been mindful to the fact that there were civilians in the area and not opened fire when the thieves began to flee and instead should have made an alternate approach.

Meanwhile the post mortem and Magisterial inquiry on the shooting was conducted in Beruwala today.

After effects of the war. More will follow if not checked.

    Travis Friday, 17 September 2010 05:10 AM

    Excellent observation! Absolutely true.

    D Friday, 17 September 2010 04:53 AM

what a sweet little boy. such a tragedy.

Tm Abay Friday, 17 September 2010 04:45 AM

The end of war really didn't make our lives safe. What if another irresponsible incident like this happens?

Tm Abay Friday, 17 September 2010 04:34 AM

Yeah! & we say we don't want democracy. Can U believe it?

    Yehiya-Doha Friday, 17 September 2010 03:09 AM

Innocent lower level rank in custody. Where the high rank officers. Maharagama & Mirihana two worse police to colombo suburbs.

    Amali Thursday, 16 September 2010 07:48 PM

Police officers should be well trained & the authorities should take stern action against officers who act irresponsibly!

    USA Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:32 PM

Its heartbreaking to watch this video ... So many stupid mistakes that could have been avoided and saved this precious life! Is this how the police plan to safeguard the citizens and the future of mother Lanka?

    janaka Thursday, 16 September 2010 05:12 PM

Sri Lanka Police is good for taking bribes only ...

    piyal Thursday, 16 September 2010 03:28 PM

We cannot watch this video simply cannot watch that scene.
Have these policemen got training to carry out such operation like commandos?
Can they bring that beautiful life back
How on earth can that little sister bear this?
The irresponsible men should be punished and should be removed from the police without tarnishing the entire image of the police dept

Its because Sri Lanka have 2000+ years of civilisiation. I have no dought even the 2000 year too would have been like this...not much of a diffrence.
I blame the Brits for this. Sri Lanka as a whole are a bunch of ungratefull, pathetic people.
Brits have given us a thing call democrasy...how can a monkey handle this?? Monkey is always a monkey...

    Anushka Thursday, 16 September 2010 02:47 PM

I agree completely. Just look at an army soldier and a policeman standing by the road - even the way they hold the weapon is completely different. The soldier keeps the gun pointed at the ground, and the policeman will be waving it all around the place.

    scrap_metal Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:00 PM

I'm sure half of the police force know what the "rules of engagement." really a sad story.. I personally think police shouldn't carry heavy fire arms in the first place..

    Althaf Thursday, 16 September 2010 01:54 PM

Police without brains, why would they have a shootout near a petrol station ? Isnt it Dangerous ?

    Wasantha Thursday, 16 September 2010 01:21 PM

We cannot expect cops to work more responsible manner as we know that most of them are brainless.

    Geronimo Thursday, 16 September 2010 01:18 PM

Good point Razeen. I personally shiver when I have to pass close to a cop showing off his T56.

    Geronimo Thursday, 16 September 2010 01:16 PM

Because SL cops are trigger happy idiots in uniform!

    MAMA Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:52 PM

Police is not suppose to carry fire arms, cos police is a civil security force. The carrying of arms is allowed only cos of Emergency which is being passed in the parliament for which the bunch parliamentarians are not affected but is the general public which has to take all what the govt does! We do respect the law of the country and we too are co-operating with the security but it is high time that the emergency is relaxed bit more!

    Jason Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:49 PM

Why is it that the SL Police are always making the headlines for all the wrong reasons?

Abdul Razeen Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:48 PM

I think it is too hasty to say the cops are actually responsible for this death, but it is true that they do not have enough training in handling weapons. The T-56 is a weapon designed for war, not law enforcement. If the cops are allowed to handle such a weapon in urban areas they should be properly trained.

    IMTHIYAS Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:38 PM

POLICE OFFICERS OR POLICE CONSTABLES THEY NEED PROPER TRAINING.

    spark Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:33 PM

Kumara, you are accurate. It is also the detoriation of values of the ordinary citizens that has created such violent, arrogant, ignorant and uncivilised majority.

Smart Aleck Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:19 PM

If the thieves were fleeing, was there in fact a "Shoot Out"? Or were the thieves shooting over their shoulders while fleeing?

    bash Thursday, 16 September 2010 12:06 PM

Most of our police officers are untrained, this includes the traffic policemen we encounter daily on the road... something like this needs to happen to get attention...
