Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka is to quit as Elections Chief following the conclusion of the Presidential Elections next week.

The Elections Commissioner had told political party representatives a short while ago that he will resign as none of his recommendations have been followed by the political parties contesting the polls next week, JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka told reporters.

The Elections Commissioner also told political party representatives that the competent authority appointed by him to oversee the conduct of the State media has been withdrawn as he failed to carry out his duties properly.  (ISA and SMD)

Quitting, is a cowardly act by the EC! When he has all the power he needs (the police, the forces, the courts, etc.) but yet, gives-in to thuggery and intransigence, he is only aiding and abetting those who are preventing a fair election!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:05 PM

If you can't hold this election, in a proper manner, quit now!

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 04:39 PM

how much more can he handle sole handedly state media has taken him for a joke but those responsible will pay the consequence

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:14 PM

He wants to quit, before the Election Commission is setup, to avoid being charged for conducting Elections in improper manner.

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 10:05 AM

A good decision. But before u go pls see that this election is held in the most fair and peaceful manner in spite of the murders and thuggery.

Hi - Your directives to the Political Parties are Administrative directives. If they failed to carry out your directives you can get relief from the Supreme Court of "Sri Lanka". What about Mandamus/Certiorari/Injunctions/Interim Orders etc. and as a last resort HELP OF THE UNDERWORLD, a quick way to resolve problems.!!! nihalg

This guy is the most ineffective EC ever. Sooner he leaves better it is for SF.

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:31 AM

    No problem.

    Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:10 AM

    Dear EC
Pls , anounce after the PE, "Invite educate peoples to come forward to rulling this country" Otherwise we loss our motherland.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 07:15 PM

    Good decision!

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 06:07 PM

This time the stess must be massive, caused by those in power!

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 05:11 PM

This man is not fit to hold the post, any longer. He cannot even impose the Election Law. In the least, he should have had the courage to make known the persons who hindered him, in the proper exercise of his duties!

This gentleman already suffers from stroke and he needs rest. The winning party should replace for good. A gentleman to the hilt.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:28 AM

An honest man - couldn't take it anymore....

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:24 PM

This is the same statement he has made after all major elections and never resigned. This will be the same

    MICHAEL Tuesday, 19 January 2010 01:17 PM

He has tried everytime to conduct elections in a fair manner. At the end of each election he tried to convince all the parties to make a change in the system. No one took heed, but when an election comes they start complaining. Our opposition, for a whole of 5 years sits in parliament like impotent mules and complain like babies at the end. What ever happened to opposing methods like mass agitations and strikes, atleast for good reasons other than for hunger of power? Does it have to be an election to make a difference?

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 01:15 PM

If u can't have a free and fair election in ur capacity , quit now.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 01:09 PM

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 12:24 PM

    Why wait till it's over?
He said the same in 2005 too.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 12:16 PM

After all u also must have a rest
