The Puttalam High Court sentenced a man to death by hanging this evening for the murder of his wife. In the absence of the death sentence the man will serve life in jail.
High Court Judge Arfa Thasim sentenced Segu Mohideen to death following the hearing this evening, for murdering his wife in 2007 by stabbing her with a knife.
The evidence against the man was given by his daughter who witnessed the incident at the time and lodged a complaint with the Puttalam police.
In delivering the judgment, the High Court judge, as is tradition when giving the death sentence, switched off the lights in the Court, delivered the judgment, broke the pen and then used for the judgment and then vacated her seat. (Daily Mirror online)

My deepest sympathies to the daughter. No child deserves such multiple tragedy - witness the mother's death, give evidence againgst a parent, and, thereby, lose the second parent as well. State's responsibility does not stop with punishing the father - the State has the responsibility to ensure the child gets the best of support that she deserves.

To serve life in the prison is the proper punishment.

Your question is answered in the very first sentence of the news item as "In the absence of the death sentence the man will serve life in jail."

Its better for the daughter to be without a father of this nature rather than to have such one.

Now for the pertinent question: IS THERE A DEATH PENALTY, IN FORCE, IN OUR COUNTRY?

Who are we to decide what the punishment should be?

Judgment was delivered in just three years - this is pretty good, by Sri Lankan standards.

We should introduce death sentence. If not how are we going to punish war criminals….We can’t afford to let those guys be alive for the sake of human kind.

He should be stabbed to death as he did to his wife. He is not a human being.

There Should be Death Sentence or else who knows weather the culprit may escape from Bail. this should be a lesson for all the criminals so we can see a better Sri Lanka in the future.
