India’s ruling Congress party rejected claims by a top Sri Lankan official that the Sri Lankan government’s decision to stop the use of heavy weapons during the latter stages of the war helped the Indian government win the General elections in Tamil Nadu last year.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online, Congress spokesperson, Shri Satyavrat Chaturvedi, said that the local political and economic issues in India were more dominant than the Sri Lankan issue in the outcome of the Indian polls.

“During the Elections both the rival Parties, M. Karunanidhi and his Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam party (DMK) and J. Jayalalitha’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party were sympathizing with the Sri Lankan Tamils and this issue was the common feature that was being used by both parties so no single party had the advantage,” Satyavrat added.

Secretary to the President Lailith Weerathunga had told Daily Mirror online last week that President Mahinda Rajapakse helped India’s congress party win the general elections in Tamil Nadu last year by reaching an agreement with the Indian Government to stop using heavy weapons during the last stages of the war. Tamil fanatics in Indian state of Tamilnadu were dividing votes between two dravidian parties as stated many time before during and after elections- to which side the Indian nationalist congressmen join that side would win- therefore the election result didn't affect by the fact of self immolatory tactics of fanatic parties at the time of going to election it seemed that they may fetch more seats but atlast all the proLTTE candidates defeated except a few retained their seats. Congress too lost some vital boroughs because of the failure of Karunanidhi to stop the war- soft weapons heavy weapons euphemism would not have worked well. It is true Tamilnadians are worried over local problems than overseas ones and never in any Indian election the foreign relations issue played prominent role; it was a failure on the part of BJP to whip up anti incumbency wave to show Mumbai terror as a reason!

Shri Satyavrat Chaturvedi is rejecting only the effect, but not the basis, of SL's claim.

Another clear example of too many clowns spoiling the circus, this time in MR's camp, same as happening in SF's camp, this seems to be spreading like a disease. At the end, it is we who would be deprived of a chance for great entertainment....

The Indians are telling lies. The politicos must be taken to a war crimes tribunal and grilled to get the truth.

You are right sheque. Truth can never be burried. If one is aware of events of the world one can see the powers that tried to hide the truth though partially successful the trugh have emerged even after 40 years to haunt and punish those who abused and got away with easily brandishing their power. Only the time will reveal and we wait patiently for that.

Anyone with a brain to think know what is that one month delay for the final assault on LTTE during the 2009 Indian general election for. Ungratefulness is not a good virtue.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:58 AM

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:41 AM

This shows the stupidity of the officer concerned. This type of confidential matters should not be leaked to the media. Since I ndia has refuted this claim, the officer concerned must resign immediately.

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:41 AM

I thinks its time to come and tell the truth once and for all. This kind of stupid acts makes our country silly. Its time for the band wagon to pack the bags....

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:36 AM

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:32 AM

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:10 AM

We can understand the Congress party's position. They must be feeling ashamed of the incident. Hats off for the way this government dealt India during the war. May foreign policy pundits of the past could not do this!

    Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:54 AM

It was clear and we all knew that india wanted to Stop or pause to the war during their election. Now they are going to wash their hands. If MR was not there god knows what will happen to the war.
