Cabinet is set to approve proposed constitutional and electoral reforms within the next fortnight and present them in Parliament in July with the aim to pass them before President Mahinda Rajapaksa takes oaths for his second term on November 17, a senior Minister said today.

General Secretary of the SLFP, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena addressing the media at the Mahaweli Center said reforms include the introduction of an electoral process that carries a combination of first past the pose system and the PR system with members from the Pradeshiya Sabha level to Parliament level taking the responsibility (or answerable) to their wards and constituencies as the case may be, a second chamber to review Parliamentary Bills, strengthening of the 17th Amendment to give more power to independent commissions and remove the restriction on the Executive President to seek a third mandate or beyond. This is what President Abraham Lincoln told "Nearly all men can stand adversity but if you want to test a man's character give him power".

Doesnt Buddhism teach about the impermanence of things? Doesnt Buddhism discourage craving? - thannava. Well does he think he can go on forever and ever, and isnt he craving for power? Is this why he is craving for the 2/3 majority? Even in the US, a president goes on for two terms only. If he gets of 2/3 - President - MR, PM - BR, Speaker - CR, Economic Development - NR. It will be, yes not 10% but 100% for the Rajapaksas, for generations to generation from death do us part..

but abolishing the executive presidency or curbing the powers was on the agenda of MR before the elections.........

    Monday, 10 May 2010 08:13 AM

The whole aim of these so called reforms is to give the incumbent President a third term

    Monday, 10 May 2010 11:19 AM

We all must try to grab a share of the pie than trying reforms

    Monday, 10 May 2010 11:01 AM

You are very correct. Who decide only 2nd time. That was decided by Mr. JRJ by perhaps considering his age at that time. Why we cannot change it to 3 even to 4 or unlimited.

What ever reforms they want do it as wish. Thats not the thing we need as sri lankans. We need good leadership with his proper development plan (specific longterm benificial projects which could position SL internationaly). never mind ruling 10 years or 100 year by any party, any person. There should be right policies & procedures, clear vision with strong leadership and hard working peoples to achive our goals.
