If we look at any nation, defence forces are used in civilian matters ONLY in emergencies. There are other govt departments with necessary expertise to engage in matters like this. The SL Army should focus more on improving their post war engagements like counter terrorism (esp overseas), intelligence gathering training (& marketing) other forces in tackling terrorists etc Not selling veges and fruits!

maybe WE all should....why are we attacking the armies? to think they only follow orders...

Calistus Jayatilleke Friday, 07 January 2011 12:23 PM

Not only vegetables, let the army step into the paddy fields and grow rice as well rather than sleep in barracks, because after all they are all paid a salary from public funds. Similarly, let the navy catch fish and the airforce shoot birds and chicks for food. After all, we are in the thick of a "Api Wawamu, Rata Nagamu" campaign. Jaya wewa.

    Dee Friday, 07 January 2011 12:07 PM

navy for fish, air force for chicken , you stupid.

    Dee Friday, 07 January 2011 12:06 PM

    s jayawardene Friday, 07 January 2011 06:36 AM

Why only Army? what about other forces. Surely these soldiers must be supporter of SF.

    bash Friday, 07 January 2011 05:10 AM

The army is not a profit making entity, it is run by the taxes

    Kari Friday, 07 January 2011 04:50 AM

Then what the ministries and departments resposible for this task would do??

    citizen1 Friday, 07 January 2011 04:41 AM

    Good point.

    dharshana Friday, 07 January 2011 04:37 AM

    economic war!

    premachandra Friday, 07 January 2011 03:55 AM

This is a very good step. Army can sell the vegetables for a lesser price keeping a small profit margin. This may help the prices to go down . Kalu Kada Mudalalis also cant do any thing as it is done by the army. If some one else other than the army does this will have to face severe repercussions.

MK _MODA KOLLA Friday, 07 January 2011 03:24 AM

Definatly will get a resonable price, but the question is when?

    Fayad Friday, 07 January 2011 02:48 AM

Any way if people are getting a better deal we should not mine army,navy,air-force or police in action.End result concessionary rates.

Konde bendapu china Thursday, 06 January 2011 10:04 AM

As there is no war, this is very good move to crash Dambulla and other vegetable mafia,at least farmer will get reasonable price

    Jozy Friday, 07 January 2011 02:22 AM

You may consider as a joke, very soon it will become serious? Now they took vegetable market, next move may be small business after like octopus they will capture big business? When they succeed in those private sector business, all Govt sectors will go automatically to their hands! You peoples won't understand , you all are tube lights? Very soon Sri Lanka the paradise become a small CHINA? It is written in the Holy Bible?

Ausie boy Friday, 07 January 2011 02:06 AM

It seems GOSL can't control traders, not a good move...

    kath Thursday, 06 January 2011 10:14 PM

Good idea , This way further war crime can be stopped

    Thas Thursday, 06 January 2011 09:23 PM

Army should also be used to clean the garbage.

    R.S. Samarawickrama Thursday, 06 January 2011 07:18 PM

The people who have enough land space should be "forced" to grow their own vegetables "at gun point" with assistance of the agriculture department of Sri Lanka!!!

Vimal Deve Thursday, 06 January 2011 07:08 PM

Even the vegetable market is going under the direct supervison of Defence Secretary. How about the fish market?

    Aru Thursday, 06 January 2011 04:40 PM

Fantastic. Where would the vegetables be available?

    Kattai P Thursday, 06 January 2011 10:29 AM

This is fine and Army should help fight Drugs too. SL is on the way to recovery.

Sri Lankan Thursday, 06 January 2011 10:09 AM

Good Move..... I think we should stop this trade mafia any how...

    ThomasT Thursday, 06 January 2011 10:04 AM

Now that the war is over, WHY NOT ENGAGE THE ARMY IN WAR FOOTING TO GROW VEGETABLES, FRUITS, RICE etc, and the NAVY to catch fish in high seas, to bring down the cost of living.
The Defence Ministry can utilize their Manpower to best use than, having them rested in the Barracks

    KD Thursday, 06 January 2011 10:06 AM

surely a low point in our great armies' colorful history..
